Studio Ghibli forays into computer animation with Earwig and the Witch, the esteemed studio's first full 3D CG animated film. Though the animation aesthetic may be new, the film's story and themes are unmistakably Ghibli. Directed by Miyazaki Goro (From Up on Poppy Hill) as a co-production with NHK, Earwig and the Witch is a magical coming-of-age fantasy based on a novel by Diana Wynne Jones, the writer of Howl's Moving Castle.
Spunky 10-year-old girl Earwig grew up in an orphanage where she's used to getting her way. Content with her present living arrangement, she doesn't want to leave the orphanage at all. One day, a flashy-looking woman named Bella Yaga and a tall man named Mandrake show up and adopt her. After bringing Earwig home, Bella Yaga declares herself to be a witch, and that she just wants an extra pair of hands around. Earwig agrees to be Bella Yaga's assistant, but only if she can learn magic in exchange. However, Bella Yaga just puts Earwig to work without teaching her anything. Undeterred, Earwig secretly learns on her own with the help of cat familiar Thomas, and turns the tables on Bella Yaga.
