This historical epic is Imamura's most ambitious project so far. According to himself, he has conceived the idea of the film for ten years and spent six years in writing and revising the script. The story takes place just during the Keio Era in mid-nineteenth century Japan and tells of a peasant riot conspired by the various political factions of the time."Time Out" magazine has this to say of the film : "Imamura breathes bawdy life into the bones of Japanese history with this mosaic portrait of the political chaos preceding the Imperial Meiji Restoration. A confusing welter of factions and mercenary figures flit through a complex of allegiances and relationships, but as the title translate - echoing the rioters' cries - "What the hell!", the canvas in vivid enought to impress the most Eurocentric of spectacles."

A big, big story by Imamura Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Eijanaika" is a great, sprawling, violent, comic, complex, bawdy, colorful mess of an epic about a society coming apart at the seams. The film's primary focus is on Genji, a Japanese farmer who spends six years in America after he is rescued by an American ship after a boating accident. The film begins with his return to Japan and to his home. He learns that his wife has been sold into slavery and goes in search of her.

Genji finds his wife in the big city working as a performer in a bawdy show, a show in which she encourages men to "tickle the goddess". I'll leave to your imagination what that might mean. Now reunited, Genji seeks to raise funds so that he and his wife can journey to America to become landowners and farmers. Genji raises the money by joining a gang of thieves who steal from targets that their boss, a local bigwig, wants to exploit.

It is through this connection that the film's canvas becomes much bigger, as we begin to see unfold a battle for control of Japan between the shogunate and powerful commercial interests. For a westerner like me, the story on the macro level becomes quite confusing, but on the micro level the story of the scheming of Genji and his buddies and of the local honchos grabs and holds the viewer's interest.

The exploitation of the people by the bigshots comes to a boil when the people respond to "amulets from heaven" by throwing a wild party with dancing and singing in the streets. The party spins out of control and culminates in a confrontation with the potential for great violence. Will Genji and his wife, leaders of the dancing throng, pay the price for this joyful riot or will Genji finally get his wish and go back to America? What will become of the commercial interests conspiring against the shogunate?

The interweaving of these large and small stories is handled masterfully by director Imamura Shohei. There is never a dull moment in "Eijanaika"; I may not have understood fully all of what transpired on the screen, but I was never less than enthralled. I can recommend "Eijanaika" highly.
