Acclaimed director Ann Hui explores contemporary Hong Kong poetry in the context of the city's cultural and literary landscape in the documentary Elegies. Ann Hui, who majored in poetry when she studied literature in college, wanted to make a film about poetry because she feels that poetry saved her during times of worries and difficulties.

Elegies is mainly divided into three parts, with the first part focusing on Hui visiting writer friends like Wai Yuen, Yam Gong, Tang Kwok Hin and Ma York to discuss poetry, as well as paying homage to late poets Xi Xi and Yesi through archival footage. The second and third parts follow two poets who have left Hong Kong: the free-spirited Huang Can Ran who has moved to Shenzhen, and Liu Waitong who is busy with teaching and family in Taiwan.

導演許鞍華大學念文學時主修詩歌，感其解憂紓困，於是便一償多年心願，好好拍下「我城」的詩文風景。電影主要分為三個部份，第一部份是記錄許鞍華導演親自拜訪多位香港詩人好友，如淮遠、飲江、鄧阿藍、馬若等會友論詩；並借用資料影像及照片，追懷已然離逝的西西和也斯。而整部電影的重點就落在第二部份已移居深圳，性格自由率性的詩人黃燦然及第三部份在台灣忙於講學兼顧家庭，積極入世的詩人廖偉棠。香港詩或香港詩人宛如邊緣的小草，在生活壓迫掙扎的同時，展現出頑強的生命力。
