Losing hope in life, Shoya begins to see all people with an "X" over their faces. A few years later, on the day he planned to kill himself, high schooler Shoya re-encounters Shoko. Long hailed as the future of Japanese animation, visionary filmmaker Shinkai Makoto delivered Japanese cinema's miracle story of 2016 with Your Name, which topped the box office for nine consecutive weeks on its way to becoming Japan's second biggest film of all time, behind only Miyazaki Hayao's Spirited Away. Sunao Katabuchi (Director)
| Kono Fumiyo (Writer)
Based on Kono Fumiyo's manga about the life of a tenacious woman from Hiroshima during WWII, the acclaimed animated wartime drama In This Corner of the World won numerous accolades in Japan, including Animation of the Year at the 40th Japan Academy Prize, Best Director at the 59th Blue Ribbon Awards, and Best Director and Best Film at the 90th Kinema Junpo Awards. Raised in the town of Eba in Hiroshima, Suzu is a kind and spirited girl who loves to draw and dream. In 1944, 18-year-old Suzu receives a proposal from Shusaku, a boy she met in passing as a child, and she marries to the nearby port city of Kure. While Shusaku works as a clerk at the navy base, Suzu grows into her role as a housewife by taking on domestic chores with sunny vigor. However, war creeps increasingly into their quiet civilian lives – first as food rations, then as air raids, and then unbearable tragedies.
