YesAsia Editorial Description

Enter the Fat Dragon! Donnie Yen flexes both his action and comedy chops in this delightful homage to Sammo Hung's same-titled 1978 classic, which was a zany tribute to Bruce Lee's Way of the Dragon. Amazingly athletic even in a fat suit, Donnie pays tribute to both martial arts icons in the 2020 action comedy set in Hong Kong and Tokyo. The throwback film is written by comedy meister Wong Jing and directed by action veteran Tanigaki Kenji, whose action director and choreographer credits include Big Brother, Wu Xia, Flash Point, SPL and the Rurouni Kenshin series. Wong Jing also co-stars in the film, along with Teresa Mo, Niki Chow, Takenaka Naoto and Louis Cheung.

Fallon Zhu (Donnie Yen) is a model police officer with supreme fighting skills and a high crime-busting rate. However, due to relationship issues with his fiancée (Niki Chow), he falls into despair and turns to eating to relieve his stress. As a result, he gains 200 pounds in six months! Fallon's superior (Louis Cheung) assigns him on a simple mission to escort a suspect to Japan, but many things go wrong. Besides losing his belongings, he also loses the suspect who soon turns up dead. To complete his mission, Fallon teams up with ex-cop Thor (Wong Jing) to get to the bottom of the case.

Ill-conceived story with great action sequences Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
Opinions about the Wong Jing-scripted 'Enter the Fat Dragon' seem sharply divided. Count me among those disappointed by the film. It begins promisingly. Fallon Zhu (Donnie Yen) is a Hong Kong cop about to be married to his actress girlfriend Chloe Song (Niki Chow). However, Fallon is so overzealously dedicated to his work that it has become a sore spot in his relationship with Chloe, as has his insensitively expressed opinion of Chloe's limited acting skills.

Fallon's recklessness ultimately causes Chloe to end their relationship and gets him busted down to the literal basement of the police department, where he is relegated to a desk job in the evidence room. Fallon finds solace in vending machine junk food, and soon all those empty calories cause him to blow up to 250 lbs.

The sight of Yen in a fat suit draws laughs and sympathy, and Fallon's plight has both comic and dramatic potential. Fallon's boss offers him a way out of his situation. If Fallon will successfully escort an extradited prisoner back to Japan, then he can have his old job back. As the story shifts to Japan, it quickly loses interest. The Japan offered up by this film is a cliched world of gangsters and corrupt cops. The film could have been much better if it had remained in Hong Kong and dealt with its premise in a more organic manner.

'Enter the Fat Dragon' (which in no way is a sequel to the Sammo Hung film) offers plenty of dazzling action, which Donnie Yen leavens with nice comedic touches, but by the time all the action reaches its climax I had become numb to it. The 'too much-ness' of the action sequences was exemplified by the pointless addition of an ineptly-flown helicopter to that climactic fight scene. Here's my advice to Donnie Yen: Never let Wong Jing script your movie again.
