YesAsia Editorial Description

It has been almost two decades since Eric Kwok entered the Hong Kong music industry after returning to his home city from the United States. He is a member of the duo Swing, formed with fellow singer-songwriter Jerald, and a solo artist in his own right, but he is arguably most well-known as a prolific and celebrated songwriter for Hong Kong's top singers. Eric Kwok Best Selections assembles four CDs' worth of some of his best work. The album features some of the Hong Kong music industry's most memorable songs of the past two decades, as well as hit single Iron Man, performed by Eric Kwok himself.

Professional Review of "Eric Kwok Best Selections (4CD)"

September 22, 2014

Renowned Hong Kong music producer Eric Kwok has seen a surge in popularity in recent months thanks to his "Iron Man" character in a restaurant commercial. He even won Best Actor at the Most Popular TV Commercial Awards, unexpectedly lifting his entertainment career to a new high. It just goes to show that the Hong Kong entertainment circle is still a place that can create miracles. To complement his concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum and feed the Iron Man trend, Universal Music also produced an all-new Eric Kwok compilation album.

The compilation album comes with four CDs, the first three of which contain 47 selected songs that Eric Kwok composed, produced or sang over different periods of his career. The songs range from the earliest "There's a Person" (performed by Jacky Cheung) to the recent "House of Cards" (Hacken Lee) and "So Far Yet So Close" (Eason Chan). However, EEG songs are not on the tracklist, which means songs performed by EEG-era Swing and Eason Chan as well as Joey Yung are all missing. In addition, the album contains two new songs, Eric Kwok's own talked-about hit Iron Man and the William So ballad "First Love Every Day." The fourth disc contains 17 of Eric's demo tracks, including "Heavy Taste," "Shower," "Ip Man in the Wind" and "Wedding Invitation Street," which can be considered the most original versions of the songs.

Even though the EEG songs are missing, the album still collects a large number of Eric's representative works, including many that were released after his last album Eric Kwok's Leet Collection, so the song selection is appealing in its own right. Indeed, there are quite a few songs that are worth a close listen on the album, such as the aforementioned "House of Cards" and "So Far Yet So Close." Jacky Cheung and Eason Chan's second duet "On the Same Boat," Gin Lee's "Rose's Story," Kay Tse's "Wedding Invitation Street" and Eason Chan's "Heavy Taste," "Green Card" and "Realm of No One" are all rare Cantopop hits of recent years. Eric essentials like "There's a Person," "Boys That I Have Loved," "One Flower," "Happy Ferris Wheel," "Miriam Yeung" and Mrs. Kwok's "It's Dead" are naturally also included.

After relistening to these works in an organized manner, praise must be given to Eric for his excellent grasp of Hong Kong music tastes over the past decade. His works embrace popular music sensibilities without being crude. The melodies are smooth, catchy and conducive to repeated listens. His ability to strand strong in the music industry for so many years is not an accident but a testament to his talent.

As for the new songs, Eric's own Iron Man has generated a lot of buzz online. The smooth melody is easy to remember and rolls off the tongue while the arrangement very appropriately creates a "superhero" atmosphere to stylish and exciting effect. The lyrics co-penned by Eric and Riley Lam are also detailed and fun. For example, there's one humorous yet bittersweet section that goes like this: "Everyone calls me Downey, cocky and mischievous, big eyes and thick eyebrows / Who notices my efforts composing 1984 / I hardly act, you hardly care / Want to take pictures with me, so strange that there are so many kids / So strange indeed, such a strange thing / Looking like Iron Man is a kind of luck." Eric sings the song in a cool, lively and ear-catching manner with a bit of swagger.

The other new song, "First Love Every Day," is a mainstream ballad that feels a bit like William So's previous "Cheap Love Song." Anyways, it's the kind of So-style good man's love song that he sings a lot. The whole song sounds nice and smooth, and should be popular at karaoke. The lyrics are very happy and very sweet, to the extent that one doubts whether it's possible in real life to have something so ideal: "How should a happy life be designed to perfection / I'll ask you every year, every month, every day." Finally, the demo tracks are also worth a close listen. The demo for "Heavy Taste," for example, will bring knowing smiles to faces.
