1979年,卡巴金博士為麻州大學醫學院開設減壓診所,並設計了「正念減壓」課程(Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, MBSR),協助病人以正念禪修處理壓力、疼痛和疾病,獲得多方肯定。1995年,麻州大學再邀請卡巴金博士設立「正念醫療健康中心」,他開始進行關於身心互動療癒效能的研究與臨床應用,希望能藉此有效緩減慢性疼痛與壓力引起種種失調症狀。

二十多年來,卡巴金博士創發的「正念減壓療法」已為醫療、學校、企業、監獄等機構廣泛應用,目前美加約有二百多家醫療院所和相關機構都運用正念減壓療法幫助病人。此外,卡巴金博士也是費茲研究院(Fetzer Institute)創始會員及行為醫療學會(Society of Behavioral Medicine)會員,對靈性療癒的貢獻良多,獲獎無數,並曾獲頒健康與療癒研究所(Institute for Health and Healing)的「藝術、科學暨靈性療癒獎」(1998)、行為與認知治療協會(Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies)的傑出榮譽獎(2005),以及布萊威爾整合醫學組織(The Bravewell Collaborative)的「整合醫學先驅獎」(2007)等。他也是精神與生命研究所(Mind and Life Institute)的董事,協助推動佛教界領袖與西方科學家的對話與交流,以期更深刻探索人類的心智、情緒與疾病。著有多本暢銷書,包括《當下,繁花盛開》、《Full Catastrophe Living》(暫譯《正念減壓生活》)、《Mindfulness for Beginners》(暫譯《初學者的正念課》)等,目前和家人定居波士頓。
