YesAsia Editorial Description
Yau Shing (Hins Cheung) works for So Good Security along with Jelly (Hung Kaho), Chu Hung (Carl Ao Ieong) and Penguin (Jeffrey Ngai). The security team is transporting diamonds, but there's not much to worry about as robberies don't happen in Hong Kong. Except on this particular day, it does. Their armored truck is intercepted by a gang of robbers, and Yau Shing immediately surrenders and hands over the goods. Hot-blooded newbie Penguin, however, fires back. In the ensuing chaos, Jelly runs off with the diamonds. To save their own hides, Yau Shing and Penguin must recover the loot for the robbers. The two bumbling security guards and gangster Monk (Michael Ning) follow Jelly's GPS signal to a remote village with strange residents and dark secrets.

For some reason, the 2004 Korean horror comedy To Catch a Virgin Ghost has inspired not one but two Chinese-language remakes in recent years – Taiwan's Treat or Trick in 2021 and Hong Kong's Everything Under Control in 2023. Both remakes follow the same premise of a desperate guy and a gang henchman entering a creepy remote village in search of a colleague who ran off with stolen diamonds that the mob wants back. Each film localizes in different ways, particularly in the relative emphasis of the comedy, mystery and horror elements. Comedy comes first for Everything Under Control which was released in Hong Kong during Chinese New Year.
Singer Hins Cheung makes a rare leading film appearance as jaded security guard Yau Shing whose team encounters robbers on the road. Before he can just hand over the diamonds, one newbie security (rising star Jeffrey Ngai) foolishly tries to fire back and another (new-generation singer Hung Kaho) runs off with the MacGuffin. Yau Shing has to track down his runaway colleague and the diamonds for the robbers, or they're all dead meat. The GPS tracker leads them to a strange village full of strange residents, including a ghostly long-haired girl in white and Ivana Wong as a controlling commune leader. Everything Under Control is all over the place with developments both wacky and serious. The eccentric characters dole out visual and verbal comedy of different stripes, along with occasional jump scares, wushu action and social discourse. This madcap smorgasbord is acceptable, even expected, for a Lunar New Year comedy. What surprises me is that Everything Under Control manages to be over the top without being annoying. Ying Chi Wen, who previously helmed the sports comedy-drama Life Must Go On, writes and directs Everything Under Control with local audiences in mind, delivering a wake-up call to just care about something. The film is carried by a Hong Kong brand of comedy that gamely rolls out sight gags, potty humor, wry digs, local references, nonsensical turns and a cynical realism about Hong Kong life. A running joke through the film rags on the state of Hong Kong cinema while also professing love for it. Everything Under Control may not be better than other versions of the film, but it's an entertaining if messy watch in its own right as a Hong Kong Lunar New Year comedy. |
