YesAsia Editorial Description

Widely considered one of the best Chinese films of all time, Chen Kaige's 1993 masterpiece Farewell My Concubine spans half a century in the lives of two Peking Opera stars played by Zhang Fengyi and Leslie Cheung. Their deep yet conflicted bond to each other and the stage is set against the upheaval of modern Chinese history, from the Sino-Japanese War and Japanese occupation to the Civil War and the Cultural Revolution. World-famous actress Gong Li plays the woman who comes between them. Remembered especially for its beautiful visuals, sprawling political and historical backdrop, and Leslie Cheung's iconic role as the tragic Chen Dieyi in love with his co-star, Farewell My Concubine met with critical acclaim worldwide, becoming the first Chinese film to win the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival as well as garnering Oscar nominations for Best Foreign Film and Best Cinematography.

Hong Kong Blu Ray edition is a win!! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This review of Farewell My Concubine is for the Hong Kong Region A Blu Ray. In short, it's everything I hoped for. I had left a review for the Korean Blu Ray a while back which was somewhat negative. I had hoped for a long time that a Hong Kong edition of this masterpiece would one day be available and it finally is. Hong Kong consistently produces high quality Blu Rays based on my experience and this edition of Farewell My Concubine does not dissapoint. The video quality is superb, with sharp imagery and vibrant colors and the English subtitles are fairly consistent with the US DVD release that came out many years ago. This is likely the best version of the film available. I am thrilled that this film has received the treatment that it deserves. There are other Blu Ray editions of this film available but now that I own the Hong Kong Blu Ray my search for a top quality Blu Ray is finally at an end. I hope that this will be the beginning of future Hong Kong releases of Chen Kaige's films. I would particularly like to see Temptress Moon and The Emperor and The Assassin get this level of treatment. But for now, if you are a fan of Farewell My Concubine, I highly recommend this Blu Ray edition.

Where is Cantonese version ? Customer Review Rated Bad 2 - 2 out of 10
Luckily I have the laser disc version from 20 years ago which has the Cantonese audio. If it is suppose to be Hong Kong version, where is the Cantonese audio ? Would it not make sense to include Cantonese soundtrack, especially a blu-ray version ? For the exclusion, I give it a 2 because it hasn't improved over the other versions with just Mandarin.

Blu Ray review Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
This blu ray edition is a slight improvement over the U.S. DVD. I had hoped for a better picture quality like I have seen on other blu rays but I found this one lacking. However this edition is probably the best you will find at this time. The English subtitles had errors as well but the lettering looks better than the DVD. I hope we see a future release that will show an improvement in quality.

Leslie's Finest Performance! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Before seeing Leslie Cheung in Farewell My Concubine, I had seen him in approximately a dozen other movies, playing everything from macho police cadet to romantic hero to gigolo. He was equally impressive in each of these roles. But when I saw him portray Douzi in Farewell My Concubine, I saw the true extent of his brilliance. I can't imagine that anyone else could have portrayed this role so convincingly. Other reviewers have explained the story far better than I can, so I will not bore you with those details.

However, for me, the major theme of this movie is betrayal. Douzi (Cheung) is the soft, effeminate, sensitive one who plays the part of the Concubine to his longtime friend, (Zhang Fengi's) Shitou's macho role of the King in the opera which defines their lives from the age of 16 until their 40's. The title of the movie takes its name from the opera for which they are famous, "Farewell My Concubine." Although it is Shitou who is portrayed as the strong masculine partner, it is Douzi who shows the greatest courage and self-sacrifice in the face of danger and loss throughout all the years he and Shitou are together as friends and acting partners. It is obvious that Douzi has a deep love for Shitou both as a friend and as a soulmate. However, Shitou is attracted only to women and sees Dousi as a friend and acting partner only. Yet, he is not above exploiting Douzi's love for him for his own benefit. Although Shitou does have a feeling of friendship to Douzi and cares about him in his own way, Shitou is often callous and insensitive to Douzi. He is betrayed on numerous occasions by both Shitou and the woman Shitou marries. However, it is Shitou's ultimately selfish and cruel betrayal of Douzi after the Japanese occupation of China that you see the depth of Shitou's cowardice. Seemingly, without hesitation, he abandons Dousi by telling lies and saying and doing whatever he thinks is necessary to save himself from the Japanese officers' wrath. With great loyalty and love, Dousi remains silent and courageously faces the ensuing consequences rather than risk harm to his beloved Shitou.

Since the movie takes place over a period of approximately 40 years, there are a lot of political changes which take place in China during this time frame. However, even if you are not familiar with China's history, it is explained well enough that you will not be confused. The movie is visually stunning and the acting superb. Still, it is Leslie Cheung's portrayal of Douzi, the "concubine," which makes this movie worth seeing and owning. I was surprised that the movie's length is approximately 3 hours long, because it moves along so swiftly yet effortlessly. Leslie Cheung's performance is heart-breaking and made even more so given his later real-life suicide. I can't help but feel that, at least part of the time, we are seeing the "real" Leslie Cheung onscreen and not just the part he is playing. The movie is beautiful and moving and artistic. It is a masterpiece.

Farewelll My Concubine Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I've watched the US version, is there any difference between the China and US version? Certain deleted scenes perhaps? I don't know. Only verdict is that Leslie portrays this sad operatic artist with such poignant flare and artistry takes my breath away. The story exposes the kind of 'sacrifices', tough drilling and practices endured by thousands of 'peking opera' students. Naturally the overbearing practices of 'sifus' are scary enough to make you wonder if they're not a little sadistic themselves. To the western viewers this is impossible but it's true back in the old old days. Ask any one operatic fans and they'll confirm it, even Jackie Chan said so and I know so because my mother told me so.

Anyway, Gong Li put in a fine performance and became the woman who came between the 2 'brothers'. Once on the scene, everything goes downhill. It also gives you an idea of how when the communist party came into power, the once suppressed population (when under Japanese occupation) can become all powerful by taking things out of context, twists and turns, misguided judgements can cause friends to turn against each other in order to survive.

You must watch this, so brilliant, so sad, what an eye-opener!
