YesAsia Editorial Description

Produced by Yu Zheng, the 2013 Chinese costume drama Legend of Lu Zhen (a.k.a. Female Prime Minister) chronicles the life and times of a female court official during the Northern Qi Dynasty. Zhao Liying (New My Fair Princess) stars in the eponymous role of Lu Zhen, a nobleman's daughter who gets framed by her stepmother for her father's murder. With nowhere left to go, she enters the palace as a maid. Through uncommon talent, intelligence and perseverance, she earns the respect of Emperor Gao Yan (Kimi Qiao, Qing Shi Huang Fei) and captures the heart of prince Gao Zhan (Chen Xiao, Swordsman). Navigating the dangers of the palace, she rises the ranks to become the first ever female prime minister. The idol trio of Zhao Liying, Kimi Qiao and Chen Xiao are joined by an impressive supporting cast that includes Lau Suet Wah, Maggie Cheung Ho Yee, Gui Gui, Yang Rong, Tang Yixin and Li Yanxi.

Product Information

It tells a legend of the only female prime minister of China, Lu Zhen from North Qi Dynasty. Lu was born in a business family, who was intelligent and kind-hearted. Her mother died early when she was a child, as she grew up, she became her father's right hand in business. Her step-mother, an evil woman, was jealous about her being trusted by her father, so she poisoned Lu's father and set Lu up. In order to escape from being hunted, Lu managed to be a maid in the royal palace and worked hard with appreciation. Because of her intelligent, she turned into Emperor Xiaozhao, Gao Yan's pretty bosom friend and got promoted to be a high-rank official. Meanwhile, her persistence and kindness attracted the Crown Prince, Gao Zhan, but their relationship did not develop well because of their different standing. Lu was in the center of the jealousy of another maid, the hatred of Zhan's first lover, the conspiracy of Empress Dowager Lou who killed Zhan's mother. Replying on her wisdom and bravery, Lu was succeeded in helping Zhan to thwart plots launched by Lou's family on purpose of seizing the throne. Zhan was crowned the Emperor, but he couldn't marry Lu eventually. Lu afterwards determined to dedicate herself to assist the next emperor, Gao Wei, and she was finally to be the only Female Prime Minister in China history.

New-generation costume idol drama
Aired on Hunan TV in May 2013, Female Prime Minister (a.k.a. Legend of Lu Zhen) is yet another hit from sign-of-the-times producer Yu Zheng, who specializes in making trendy costume dramas that are widely panned but light up the ratings. The youth-oriented period drama depicts the inspiring life and heart-swooning love of Lu Zhen, the only female prime minister of the Northern Qi Dynasty.

No need to hit the history books, because the heroine is fictional. This comes as no surprise since Yu Zheng dramas aren't exactly known for being true to history and source material. The figures referenced here aren't as beloved or well known as say that of Beauties of the Emperor and Swordsman, though, so the liberties taken with the context are less distracting. If anything, the fictionalized protagonists are probably more likable than their historical counterparts. Female Prime Minister may not qualify as a historical drama, but as a costume idol drama, it has all the right ingredients.

Lu Zhen is supposedly loosely inspired by Lu Lingxuan, a powerful and corrupt female palace attendant of the Northern Qi who is remembered not so kindly in history. The Lu Zhen (Zhao Liying) of Female Prime Minister, however, is the kind of heroine that adulatory myths are built around. Originating from a rich family of ceramic makers, she goes through the Cinderella rites of losing her father, getting framed by her evil stepmother and becoming a wanted woman for crimes she didn't commit. She enters the palace as a servant and rises the ranks to become a palace official through her enterprise, forward thinking and talent in ceramic making. Along the way, Lu Zhen finds herself constantly caught in the middle of the ruthless power struggle between the Empress Dowager and consort Huan Yun (Yang Rong). Luckily, she has the trust of Emperor Gao Yan (Kimi Qiao) and the love of Prince Gao Zhan (Chen Xiao), who defies royal protocol to be with her.

Female Prime Minister fits in with the popular trend of palace intrigue dramas about inner court power struggles and the innocent outsider who captures the heart of the royal. Yu Zheng has already made quite a few dramas in this vein. In comparison to protagonists of other similarly themed productions, however, the character of Lu Zhen is refreshingly competent and doesn't fall neatly into a cute and bumbling or damsel in distress archetype. She still has a heart of gold, but recognizes the follies of naivete and is not above occasional deception and compromise for the greater good. Though dealt many challenges and setbacks, she decides her own fate at every turn, be it conning her way into the palace, aligning with different parties for self-preservation, striving to become a high-ranking official or setting the rules of her relationship with Gao Zhan.

Cute-as-a-button leading actress Zhao Liying has a Jang Nara-like spunk onscreen that works well with the role of Lu Zhen, her delicate appearances contrasting with the strong character. Though she looks like someone who needs to be protected, she constantly surprises by proving she's more than capable of taking care of herself. Sealing his leading man status as the Prince Charming of the drama's fan-favorite pairing, Chen Xiao, who stole the show as Lin Pingzhi in Swordsman, impresses again with his ability to do more than expected with a thinly written character. Along with Kimi Qiao playing against type as the weak-willed, kindhearted king and Yang Rong as the stubborn, misguided imperial consort, the appealing new-generation lineup goes a long way towards reeling audiences into Female Prime Minister.

This being a Yu Zheng production, things are bound to get a bit messy at some point or another, but Female Prime Minister holds out for a surprisingly long time (until the manic narrative rush of the final five episodes). The story effectively chronicles Lu Zhen's personal ups and downs in the palace against the greater context of political power play. On the romance side, though the conflicts and relationships veer into irrational dramaland, the protagonists stay in love and in character for the entire series. Tellingly, Female Prime Minister is not written by Yu Zheng but rather by Zhang Wei, who wrote the Du Lala dramas. Indeed, Female Prime Minister at times feels like a costume workplace drama when portraying Lu Zhen's efforts developing the ceramics and silk trades and dealing with budget and personnel problems. Her experience ascending the palace ladder also offers an interesting look into the Northern Qi palace ranking system for female servants and officials.

Excellent Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I love this series as the lead actress is brilliant in her acting. The actor who played the Crown Prince, Chen Xiao, is equally excellent in this series.

I would recommend this series to viewers of historical drama.
