The (true) remastered version of a classic
Since high-definition video and Blu-ray reached the mainstream, content owners have been given a chance to bring back popular old films with digitally remastered prints created using new film restoration technologies. Many of these releases – especially those done by Taiwan’s Central Motion Pictures and the Korean Film Archive – breathe new life to classic films and have been praised by collectors and film buffs alike.

However, other remastered releases have been criticized for carrying an “upscaled” version of the film instead of a true remastered version. This means that the original master prints of the films were simply blown up to high-definition size, resulting in a bigger video file that boasts no improvement in picture quality.

With lots of complaints from collectors about those releases, it’s easy to understand why many would be weary about getting the new high-definition Blu-ray of Fight Back to School. However, I can report that the Stephen Chow comedy classic now looks better than ever before. The print has clearly been cleaned up by copyright owner Win’s Film, and the Blu-ray features a very crisp picture that probably hasn’t looked this good since the film was in cinemas. Some of the indoor scenes still suffer from some pixelation, but it is overall a surprisingly great video transfer of a 24-year-old film. On the other hand, the film’s remixed audio track (from mono to high-definition digital audio) doesn’t benefit nor hurt the film very much.

Not much needs to be said about the film itself. The hilarious story about a cop going undercover as a middle school student to retrieve a missing gun, Fight Back to School is a showcase of Stephen Chow’s masterful comic talent as well as his impeccable screen chemistry with frequent co-star Ng Man Tat. Even though its sequels are less revered, the original film has remained a favorite among Chow fans for the past two decades.

Whether you’re a Hong Kong cinema fan who doesn't have a copy of Fight Back to School yet or a Stephen Chow fan who already owns the film on other formats, the new Blu-ray is an essential purchase. The film is a comedy classic that deserves plenty of repeat viewings, and this Blu-ray will give you another reason to watch it again.

Essential viewing for Stephen Chow fans Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
In comedy classic "Fight Back To School", crack police officer Star Chow (Stephen Chow) is tasked with going undercover as a high school student in search of the police chief's missing handgun. At the school, Chow is bumblingly assisted in his assignment by fellow officer Uncle Tat (Ng Man Tat), who has gone undercover as the school's janitor. Chow finds himself plunged into a world of homework assignments and schoolboy rivalries in which, much to Chow's delight, a particularly comely teacher (Sharla Cheung) takes an interest in him.

Chow's inept attempts to master his schoolwork yield plenty of laughs and a well-integrated subplot involving a ruthless gang of gun-runners juices the film with exciting action. Stephen Chow proves equally adept at physical humor, motor-mouthed comedy, and surprising fighting skills. The film benefits from the remarkable chemistry Chow enjoys with both Sharla Cheung and Ng Man Tat.

"Fight Back To School" was a smash hit at the box office and, twenty years later, it remains a comic delight. Highly recommended.

Stephen beginning to develop Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
A great performance in that 80s semi buddy-cop style where Stephen Chow's boyish good-looks get him into trouble. You can almost see that his style is trying to bust out of the type cast he's been locked in & you know alot of the funniest scenes in this movie are all him. This will always be one of his classics.

Watch this movie....... Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is one of the best movie ever made... the plot is simple but really interesting and easy to understand (I'm Italian, I don't know Chinese... thanks god for the eng subtitles, but the best thing is to hear Stephen's voice).
Stephen Chow is so funny, skillful, sexy and everything else good you can think about him...
***Also watch Fight back to school 2 & 3***
