A superstar reporter at a Nanjing newspaper, Gu is a man who seems to have it all - a respectable job, a sizeable modern apartment, and a pretty police officer girlfriend. Little does he realize his whole universe is about to fall apart after his meeting with Yang, a country bumpkin who demands public kudos in his newspaper for saving a university coed from rape.
Brushing him off at first, Gu finally decides to investigate the case thanks to Yang's relentless hounding. He finds out Yang's old dying father was a national labor model, with diplomas galore extolling his exemplary work all over the walls in his decrepit hut. Never "recognized" for anything. Yang determines to show his father his own public kudos in a last desperate attempt to keep death at bay.
But everything becomes more complicated after Gu befriends the alleged rape victim, Ouyang Hua, a blossoming young woman as beautiful as she is mysterious. She originally refuses to corroborate Yang's story. Only when the truth is about to be revealed does she try to thwart its publication by appealing to Gu's conscience, claiming that her whole future and reputation will be at stake.
At the horns of a dilemma between objective truth and subjective reality. Gu is forced to delve into his own psyche only to find his value system increasingly unreliable, the raison d'etre behind his profession on the verge of collapse, and his relationship with his long-time girlfriend all the more precarious...

"Gimme Kudos" deserves kudos
In "Gimme Kudos", newspaper reporter Gu Guoge (Wang Zhiwen) is plagued by a "fatty", a slow-witted laborer who wants the newspaper to give him kudos. The "fatty" is Yang Hongqi (Fan Wei), who claims that he saved a university student from being sexually assaulted when he inadvertently scared off the assailant. He wants the newspaper to publish a story about the alleged incident and portray him as a hero. Reporter Gu is skeptical; he wants evidence of the event before he will write a story.
Yang is persistent; every few days to Gu's office to demand kudos. Slowly, some facts begin to emerge. Yang reveals that Ouyang Hua is the name of the woman he claims to have saved. Gu tracks her down and meets her (she is played by Chen Hao), only to find that she denies Yang's story. Yang slowly dispenses other facts about that night, and when Gu checks into them, they seem to add up. But young woman continues to deny everything. When Gu asks Yang why it is so important to have a story published, Yang says it is because his father is dying of cancer and he wants his father to see the story. Gu travels to Yang's rural hometown to visit the father and finds him looking cadaverous and laying in bed, surrounded by dozens of awards for being a model worker. When he returns, Gu's police detective girlfriend (Miao Pu), who has been jealous of the time Gu has been spending with the lovely co-ed, tells him that the police now are holding a thug who has confessed to the attempted assault. Gu then goes ahead and publishes the story lauding Yang only to learn that Yang's father died before the story appeared. He next finds that Ouyang Hua is contemplating suicide, as Gu's pursuit of the story has kept the memory of the assault fresh in her mind. Tormented by these events, Gu quits his job and heads off to lose himself in Beijing. There he encounters ... well, I won't disclose it, but, believe me, it makes for a bizarre surprise ending. Wang Zhiwen, Fan Wei, and Miao Pu all deliver nicely nuanced performances in this wry tale of mystery. Director Huang Jian Xin keeps the story taut and intriguing. "Gimme Kudos" is highly recommended. |
