Wong Jing's 1996 gambling action-comedy God of Gamblers 3: The Early Stage – not to be mistaken with God of Gamblers III: Back to Shanghai starring Stephen Chow – is a prequel to the original God of Gamblers starring Chow Yun Fat. Leon Lai steps into the legendary shoes of "God of Gamblers" Ko Chun in his younger years for this entertaining origin story that co-stars Anita Yuen, Jordan Chan, Gigi Leung and Francis Ng.

Ko Chun (Leon Lai) lost his home and family at the age of 8 due to his father's gambling troubles. Raised in a card sharp group, Ko Chun learned all the gambling tricks from his godfather Kent (Chung King Fai). Eighteen years later, Ko Chun has become a master cardshark in his own right. Kent decides to organize a God of Gamblers competition to expand his business, and hints that he will agree to Ko Chun marrying his daughter (Gigi Leung) if he wins. Ko Chun advances through the competition with his skills, only to get betrayed by those closest to him. Saved by friends Seven (Anita Yuen) and Lung Wu (Jordan Chan), Ko Chun sets out to win back the title of God of Gamblers.

一名姓高的上海籍紗廠東主，因賭成禍，誤交損友，引致家破人亡。他的八歲兒子高進 (黎明 飾) 從此喪失家園，流入老千集團，跟大老千靳能 (鍾景輝 飾) 學謀生技能及千門技巧。十七年後，高進已成獨當一面的千門高手，靳能為了其事業推上高峰，決定舉辦賭神大賽，選出一位賭術極高的「賭神」作為總裁，發展全世界業務。靳能更暗示，若高進勝出，便答應將女兒靳輕 (梁詠琪 飾) 許配給他。 在賭神大賽中，高進連場報捷，但在最後關頭，靳能竟然叫高進佯作敗北，但高進為了榮譽及愛情拒絕了靳能，靳能亦暗下毒手槍擊高進。高進大命不死，獲朋友細七 (袁詠儀 飾) 及生死之交龍五 (陳小春 飾) 相救。而同門師兄高傲 (吳鎮宇 飾) 在靳能的安排之下，做了賭神，更和靳輕結婚。由於世界各地的賭場也不服高傲的賭神封號，所以集力量向高傲挑戰，再辦一次世界賭神大賽決一勝負。獲細七和龍五照料，高進傷勢好轉，更參加世界賭神大賽決戰高傲及靳能。

The best leon Lai film ever Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Although I do not rate leon too highly when it comes to acting, his acting is not actually that bad in this film. Another person who also deserves a mention is Jordan Chan who plays the part of Leon's bodygaurd pretty well.

While not consistant with I and II, this prequel is still fantastic. One of Leon Lai's best roles. Learn about Ko Chun's past, how he got his "powers". Discover Dragon in his younger years. See the friendship grow. Action, suspense, drama, comedy, betrayal. It's all here!
