YesAsia Editorial Description

Initially a serialized autobiography on Hong Kong's popular Golden Forum, Sit Ho Ching's best-selling novel about greed, family and the values of modern Hong Kongers is now a feature film! Co-written and directed by Chung Shu Kai (I Love Hong Kong), Golden Brother is an affecting tale about one man's journey to discover that a person's wealth isn't simply determined by how much money is sitting in his bank account.

Bosco Wong stars as Ho Ching, a slacker who turns to working in a shady finance firm after suspecting his girlfriend (Stephy Tang) of cheating on him with a rich man. The comedy-drama also stars William Chan (Triad) as Ho Ching's short-tempered younger brother, Liu Kai Chi (Beast Stalker, Stool Pigeon) as Ho Ching's father and Michael Tse (Turning Point) as Ho Ching's new boss.

Professional Review of "Golden Brother (2014) (Blu-ray) (Hong Kong Version)"

January 27, 2015

Based on the hit autobiographical internet novel by Sit Ho Ching, Golden Brother follows TVB star Bosco Wong as he makes a fortune through working for a shady financial brokering firm, only to learn that money doesn't necessarily buy happiness. Directed and co-written by Chung Shu Kai (I Love Hong Kong), the film also features a number of other TVB performers and popular local talents, including Stephy Tang, William Chan, Rose Chan, Michael Tse and Liu Kai Chi.

Wong plays Ho Ching himself, the film opening with him as a financially struggling young man, who falls on hard times after getting unfairly fired from his job and splitting up with his girlfriend Elna (Stephy Tang), who he's convinced is cheating on him with a richer man. Determined to make his mark, he goes against the wishes of his ex-cop father (Liu Kai Chi) and gets a job working for Michael Tse's dodgy gold speculation firm, following in the footsteps of his wayward younger brother Yong (William Chan), recently released from prison. Though his new career gets off to a rocky start, the money is soon rolling in, though complications ensue, and his burgeoning relationship with a troubled single mother called On Yi (Zhao Rong) makes him reconsider his morally dubious path.

It's an inherently familiar plot to be sure, and indeed Golden Brother is nothing if not predictable, following the usual narrative and character arc pretty much to the letter throughout. In its favour, the film does have a lot going on, Chung Shu Kai making sure that it covers all possible bases and packing in a variety of subplots into its fairly short running time, making it feel almost like a highly-condensed version of a television series. Though cliched the film does hold the interest as a result, in a modest way at least, and Ho Ching's personal journey is an enjoyable one, ringing reasonably true. This is in part due to the fact that he's genuinely not that nice a guy at the start of the film, despite his belief otherwise, and his relationships and problems with his parents, Elna and On Yi are effectively mined for lessons on his road to finally becoming more of a man. While its moralising and philosophy are undeniably insubstantial and are hammered home by Chung far more than is necessary, as a film with a message it doesn't do too badly, and generally comes across as well-meaning rather than cynically preachy.

Though Chung's direction is very TV-like, without much in the way of flair or creativity, he does keep the film moving along at a good pace and handles things competently enough. More importantly, he manages to get solid performances from his cast, who are after all the main selling point here, and Bosco Wong, onscreen for almost the entire running time, does a decent job in the lead role, making Sit Ho Ching a believable and engaging protagonist for all his flaws. The rest of the cast are similarly fine, and though their roles aren't exactly multi-layered, Stephy Tang, Zhao Rong and the others all do their bit, helping Ho Ching along his quest for self-discovery. Chung wrings a certain amount of tension from the central romantic question as to whether he'll end up with Elna or On Yi, and this helps the film to keep the viewer involved through to its conclusion, even it doesn't ever get particularly emotional.

There's enough here to make Golden Brother entertaining, if disposable viewing, and it should please fans of the cast or anyone looking for a pleasant time-passer. Though scarcely innovative and lacking in cinematic polish, it ticks most of the right boxes, and as a TV movie of the week type production audiences could certainly do worse.

Serious social issues and mirth blended Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
Central protagonist Ho Ching (Bosco) finds his whole life challenged after he suddenly loses his job and harbours a misperceived attitude towards his girlfriend Elna (Stephy), who he believes is cheating on him with a far richer man. Having a strict ex-policeman father (Kai Chi Liu) and a recently released from prison wayward bother Yong (William Chan), life at the parental home for Ho Ching is fractious and argumentative. But Ho Ching’s inspired conviction is rooted in his father’s words ‘Don’t take what doesn’t belong to you, and do your best with your talent’ but by Ho Ching’s encouraged nature becomes estranged from Yong after doing what was right for Yong and landing his brother in prison. Deemed a parental failure Yong is angry at his dad putting Ho Ching on a pedestal (Yong even absent from a family mantelpiece photo) and miffed especially with Ho Ching. But jobless Ho Ching eventually hits success with an investment currency speculation business which Yong works at. But this new dodgy vocation for Ho Ching would anger his father, especially his dad hating that Yong works at a financial scam factory and run by his ex-colleague who had betrayed and left him permanently injured. But although success alchemizes to avarice Ho Ching keeps dropping himself constantly into tactless and embarrassing accusations with Elna and also a single mother and in debt On Yi (Zhao Rong) who Ho Ching helps due to his new financial clout. Ho Ching also attracted to On Yi who inspires him to reconsider his bull at a gate attitude.

Part of the kith and kin experience is in truly understanding close friends and relatives we think we already know. ‘Golden Brother’ takes a light quirky view of such social confusions, sudden unemployment, health and relationship quarrels, although by no means trivialises these social difficulties. It’s a hotchpotch of a movie though with added titillation care of Rose Chan Ka-wun as a spectacled bombshell type (doing her Cleo Rocos chest and thighs thang on a bewildered Ho Ching) but GB does try to reflect a sort of truth about reality that when unseen situations happen in life, it’s not always clear to see the main reasons. Certainly Ho Ching is left with one big decision to make about how his life could be far more blessed than by mere avarice after he acquaints himself with On Yi. I liked Bosco as Ho Ching. Stephy although with little screen time is always good to see. For seriously based on truth mirth it’s no bad movie this.
