YesAsia Editorial Description

Sandra Ng stars as a happy-go-lucky prostitute in the critically acclaimed blockbuster comedy Golden Chicken. The film also features an all-star supporting cast that includes Andy Lau, Eric Tsang, Tony Leung Ka Fai, and Hu Jun.

Forty-year old prostitute Kum (Sandra Ng) is taking out money at an ATM when Bang (Eric Tsang) comes up from behind and tries to rob her. As luck would have it, she only has $98.2 left in her account, and is unable to draw money. What's more the ATM center automatically locks the two of them inside. With nowhere to go and plenty of time to spare, Kum relates her life experiences to Bang, revisiting all the ups and downs of the prostitution industry and the neon-lit city she calls home. The heroine of this movie stands as a perfect image of the persevering spirit of all Hong Kong citizens.

The Golden Chicken is a riotous and raunchy exploration of one woman's wacky life of prostitution, spanning over 20 years in Hong Kong. Our heroine is KUM, unattractive but so happy-go-lucky and spunky that she is a true Hong Kong survivor, and a legend in her own right. In Hong Kong, where prostitutes are referred to as chickens she has earned herself the title of the Golden Chicken the ultimake hooker.

Professional Review of "Golden Chicken (DTS Version)"

March 10, 2003

This professional review refers to Golden Chicken
In the end of 2002, Hong Kong film market has experienced a short period of rejuvenation. In early December, the two blockbusters Infernal Affairs and Hero hit the theater and received immediate success. Then Golden Chicken came out as the second wave and provided a satisfactory wrap up for the year.

This is a biographical account of a prostitute called "Ah Gum" (Sandra Ng). From a fledgling to a well experienced "one apartment one phoenix", the story of Ah Gum is never insipid or colorless. As you might have gussed right, the title of this movie Golden Chicken refers to Ah Gum. In Cantonese, the word "chicken" is a slang that is similar to "whore" in English. The term "Golden chicken" can therefore be deciphered as the best prostitute. Ah Gum's life is encouraging. Although she is a prostitute, she would not consider it a shame. She respects her profession and never gives up. It is this virtue that the filmmakers wanted to preach. The message behind is very obvious - If Ah Gum, who belongs to the minority group of the society that possesses the lowest social status, can do it, everyone in Hong Kong, who is suffering from the economic recession and other hardships, should be able to get through!

The plot structure is the major attraction of this movie. Similar to the Hollywood blockbuster Forrest Gump (What is funny is that the protagonists of both films are called Gump/Gum) in which Forrest Gump's life is intertwined with the contempoarary history of US, our Ah Gum is also a witness of what happened in the past thirty years in Hong Kong. Certainly, talking about the profundity and depth of the movie, Golden Chicken is in no way comparable to Forrest Gump. Nonetheless, it is still a very satisfactory work, as the movie is not merely entertaining, but also reflects the culture of the people genuinely and contains certain introspective moments. The only flaw is probably the lack of research for the society in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Although the nostalgic setting is well constructed, it stresses too much on the entertainment business. We know it is talking about the 1970s and 1980s only because of the drama playing on the TV and the songs playing in the background. It is very different from the 90s scenes in which a much more detailed panorama of the society is presented.

Sandra Ng is hyper energetic in this movie. Yet I probably wouldn't agree that Ah Gum is her best portrayal of movie character. To me, her low profile but lively performance in Juliet in Love is still her most decent and appealing role. Compared to the overacted Ng, the all-star cameo appearance is in fact the crucial factor that marks the success of the movie. Eason Chan, Andy Lau, Felix Wong, Wu Jin, Tony Leung Ka-fai, Cheung Kin-ting, each of them is representative and unforgettable.

Golden Chicken is not a big budget production. It does not contain any magnificent computer special effects, nor does it have visual stunning cinematography. However, this is a work of charisma and sincerity. If you want to learn about the genuine domestic culture of Hong Kong, this is a movie you shouldn't miss.

Golden Chicken is No Turkey Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I have to come right out and admit that my expectations on this film were rather low prior to watching it. I was afraid that it might turn out to be some cheap explotive quickie but found instead that the film has some heart and a great deal of humor, much of it unexpected.

Some of the film's success must be attriputed to Ng. While I didn't find her at all convincing as a teenager I found her performance more and more believeable as her character aged. Her character always comes agross as likeable and at times sympathetic. And then there's the humor. Having her attempt martial arts drunk, while Jackie Chan's character from "The Legend of Drunken Master" is playing on TV screens behind her was inspired. And the part where her idol emerges from the TV, ala Woody Allen's "The Purple Rose of Cairo," to instruct her on faking orgasms is a truely funny and inspired moment, reminding me of Meg Ryan in "When Harry Met Sally."

It was also a nice change of pace to hear America refenced in either a positive light, or in a neutral tone, as when a character is asked how things in America are the reply is "things never change in America." Not totally accurate, but them given the changes we see Hong Kong go thru during her time as a "chicken" then the response seems accurate enough.

The VCD, from Panorama looks and sounds very good. I recommend this film!

Excellent comedy Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Sandra Ng is fantastic in her role as a 'woman of the night' the cameo appearance of Andy Lau also deserves a mention as does the performance given by eric tsang. This film stirs up a mixture of emotions as it tells a tale of hong kong through its highs and lows from the 1980s through to present day, through the eyes of a working girl. My award for comedy of the year. Simply Brilliant!

OK Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
this movie wasn't as good as i hoped...a lot of people said it's really funny, but i only found it kind of funny. yes sandra acts well and she is funny, but really the whole prostitute thing didn't make me laugh. the history of hk was more interesting in this movie than anything else. check it out if you like sandra ng and want a history lesson, but prepare yourself for some explicit storyline.
