Singer-songwriter Hitoto Yo based the lyrics for the ballad Hanamizuki on a series of e-mails she received from a friend after the September 11 terrorist attacks. About overcoming obstacles on the road to eternal love, the song became an award-winning hit that has consistently been one of the most requested songs in Japanese karaoke parlors nationwide since its release in 2004. In the tradition of music-derived pure romance films like Signs of Love and Tears for You, director Doi Nobuhiro (Be With You) now brings another hit song's story to life with Hanamizuki.

Written by longtime television scriptwriter Yoshida Noriko - who also adapted the song Nada Sou Sou into Tears For You - Hanamizuki is now a story about two young lovers torn apart by circumstances who continue to stay in love for over a decade. Actress-singer Aragaki Yui (Koizora) and Ikuta Toma (Ningen Shikkaku) have plenty of romantic chemistry as the film's central couple, while Mukai Osamu (Hotaru no Hikari 2), Yakushimaru Hiroko (The Always series), Matsushige Yutaka (Sukiyaki Western Django), and Arata (Air Doll) also provide strong supporting performances. With attractive stars and the equally attractive scenery of Hokkaido, Tokyo, and New York, Hanamizuki is the perfect film for the pure romance film fan in everyone.

Sae (Aragaki Yui) and Kohei (Ikuta Toma) first meet when the latter tries to help Sae get to her driving test. However, the ensuing accident during the effort causes Kohei to quit school and work for his fisherman father (Matsushige Yutaka), while Sae loses her chance to study in a prestigious Tokyo university. The two eventually fall in love, but are separated when Sae takes a second opportunity to go to Tokyo. Even though they are committed to a long-distance relationship, Sae's friendship with handsome photographer Junichi (Mukai Osamu) and Kohei's struggle to keep his father's business afloat threaten to drive them apart.

為著夢想而一直奮鬥的平澤紗枝(新垣結衣飾)，父親早年因病過身，從小跟母親良子(藥師丸博子飾)在北海道相依為命。父親臨過身前，於庭園裡種了一棵很特別的樹，為了把對年幼女兒深藏的情怠統統灌注到這棵花水木樹上，默默守護著紗枝成長。

一直以考入東京的大學為眼標的紗枝，因一次意外偶遇木內康平(生田斗真飾)，不久即墮入愛河。紗枝在康平的鼓勵下，終於如願以償考上東京有名的早稻田大學，康平卻因為要承擔家計而當上漁夫，兩人面對遠距離的相思之苦，最終還是為對方著想而選擇分開。經開多年的離別，他們各自經歷了各人生重要的十年成長後，在命運的牽動下，再次相遇……

全片包含初戀、遠距戀愛、分手、以及新的邂逅、成長和挫折等元素，透過女主角父親生前在庭園所種的一棵花水木默默注視下，演釋出一對飽受命運捉弄的真情愛侶，在彼此不斷錯失又不斷思念下，相愛分離又重逢的溫暖純愛物語。
