YesAsia Editorial Description

Ayase Haruka (Ichi, Cyborg She) flies high in her latest blockbuster Happy Flight! The popular actress, who won Best Actress at the Nikkan Sports Film Award for her performance, stars as a rookie flight attendant in the entertaining feel-good comedy from Water Boys and Swing Girls director Yaguchi Shinobu. Centering around the ins and outs of a single flight from Tokyo to Honolulu, the aptly titled Happy Flight provides a lighthearted but comprehensive look at commercial aviation from the flight crew to the ground crew to counter personnel to traffic control to grouchy passengers. Co-starring Tanabe Seiichi (In the Pool) as a pilot, this breezy ensemble workplace comedy packs in more than enough good humor, amusing characters, and smile-tugging diversions to ensure a Happy Flight.

Co-pilot Kazuhiro (Tanabe Seiichi) is up for promotion, but before he can get his captain's wings he has to get through a flight evaluation, and things aren't exactly going his way. He just crashed and burned on a simulated flight test, and his friendly examiner has been replaced with the tough-as-nails Harada (Tokito Saburo). On the same plane is cabin attendant Etsuko (Ayase Haruka) who's flying her first international flight and trying hard to not mess up. Elsewhere in the Happy Flight universe, staff are bustling back and forth with various problems and gripes - all to make this ordinary yet fateful flight a safe and happy one.

Don't worry be happy
In today's fast-moving world, planes are the main means of taking people to distant travelling destinations. Yaguchi Shinobu makes a special film dedicated to the airliner in Happy Flight. The movie brings the whole airport industry alive in a charming way, with Ayase Haruka and Tanabe Seiichi caught in the middle as a stewardess and a co-pilot on their maiden flights.

It was an absolute delight for me to observe the film's flight attendant group, including Mari (Fukiishi Kazue) who gets a kick out of having foot massages while devouring a meal during an excessively short on-flight break. I also found Terajima Shinobu as chief stewardess Yamazaki, who has the reputation of being a dragon but actually is merely totally devoted to her job, very convincing. Tokito Saburo as stern aircraft captain Harada, who is still able to maintain his sense of humor, is another credit as supporting actor. As far as the airport ground personnel is concerned, Tabata Tomiko and Hiraiwa Kami slip into the roles of Kimura and Yoshida who leave no stone unturned to help resolve problems encountered by passengers before and after boarding. Tayama Ryousei is also noteworthy as demanding ground personnel manager Morita who restores a couple of honeymooners' trust in flying. Sugawara Daikichi meanwhile seems to fully enjoy his supporting role as a gentleman turned busybody passenger insisting that the customer is always right.

Though the film builds up to a finale revolving around an emergency landing, the film stays true to its title, right up to the plane's captain who advises stressed-out co-pilot Kazuhiro (Tanabe Seiichi) to keep smiling as he prepares for his first real crucial landing. After disappointing first attempts at her job, Ayase Haruka's Etsuko is able to reclaim her lost smile when chief stewardess Yamazaki gives her the chance to reveal her talents in the pantry.

Overall, I enjoyed the feel-good atmosphere of the film. The pleasing flight with a winning crew in the air and on the ground just might make you long for your next trip to the airport. Mostly a smiling affair, Happy Flight closes in an optimistic way as the crew takes off to their next destination, appropriately accompanied by the Frank Sinatra number Come Fly With Me.

All aboard this "Happy Flight" Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I believe "Happy Flight" is being mismarketed as a comedy. While it yields plenty of laughs in its first half, "Happy Flight" might more aptly be described as a slice-of-life film, a behind the scenes look at one airline flight from Tokyo to Hawa'ii, examining the roles of pilots, flight attendants, passengers, flight control personnel, ticket agents, and ground crew, and telling us something fresh about each of these groups. It even gives us a "bird man", an airport employee charged with scaring off birds from the flight paths of the giant airplanes.

At the center of the movie are two characters, co-pilot Kazuhiro (Tanabe Seiichi), who is given the driver's seat on this flight as a final test for promotion to full pilot status, and fledgling flight attendant Etsuko (Ayase Haruka), who is working her first big international flight. Both of them get much more than they bargained for, as damage to the plane prevents them from reaching their destination, but a typhoon blocks their return to Tokyo. The film's last half-hour becomes a white-knuckle thrill ride as Kazuhiro fights to bring the plane safely down. Along the way, "Happy Flight" serves up lessons in teamwork, perseverance, respect for authority, creativity, and boldness, and does so in a way that brings its stories to life.

Ayase Haruka shines as the young cabin attendant, but this really is an ensemble piece and the whole cast does engaging and believable work. Kudos also must be given to the filmmakers, particularly the editor. With such a huge cast, so many different storylines, and the challenge of filming in very confined surroundings, it is a marvel that this film flows so smoothly. "Happy Flight" is a happy treat for the entire family.
