In 2010, Hong Kong producer Manfred Wong and director Raymond Yip's low-budget road comedy Lost on Journey achieved unexpected success in China. Two years later, the duo joined forces again on their second Mainland movie, this time with popular actor Wen Zhang (Love is Not Blind) and actress Liu Yun (You Deserve to Be Single). Co-starring veteran actor Zhang Fengyi (Red Cliff) and skit actress Cai Ming, Happy New Year (a.k.a. A Happy Chinese New Year) is a delightful urban comedy about the post-80s generation's attitude towards life, family, and relationship in contemporary China.

Young married couple Zhang Xuelun (Wen Zhang) and Zheng Dandan (Liu Yun) are faced with the frightening prospect of their parents coming to visit them in Beijing during the Chinese New Year. That's because they've sold the love nest Dandan's mother (Cai Ming) had given them in a bid to raise the cash to settle an investment setback soon after their wedding. Desperate to maintain a façade of normalcy, Xuelun and Dandan must, by hook or by crook, cover up the truth from their parents...
