YesAsia Editorial Description

Directed by Jo Woon, the aptly titled Head is indeed about a head - a stolen head that unwittingly throws two siblings into a fight for their lives. Park Ye Jin (Fortune Salon) is the heroine of this quirky, fast-paced thriller, which mixes media mayhem and gallows humor into its tale of murder, dismembering, and kidnapping. Ryu Deok Hwan (Private Eye) co-stars as the kidnapped brother, Baek Yoon Shik (Tazza: The High Rollers) as the cold killer, g.o.d's Danny Ahn (Crazy Waiting) as the reporter friend, and Oh Dal Soo (Detective K) as the original owner of the Head that starts off this whole manic chase.

After famed scientist Kim Sang Chul (Oh Dal Soo) commits suicide, his head mysteriously goes missing. Meanwhile, mouthy courier Hong Jae (Ryu Deok Hwan) opens a package he shouldn't have, discovers the head inside, and almost gets killed escaping the package's sender, mortician-cum-executor Baek Jung (Baek Yoon Shik). At the request of his scoop-hungry reporter sister Hong Joo (Park Ye Jin), Hong Jae stashes the head and goes home, only to get nabbed by Baek Jung. Hong Joo has the head in an icebox, Baek Jung has her brother in a cold room waiting to be dissected. The shocking truth behind the crimes unfold as the two face off in a wild battle of wits.

Head in a Box
Korean thriller Head begins with the rather surreal image of a corpse turning up at the mortuary with a watermelon where its head should be. The body is of a brilliant scientist (Oh Dal Soo) who committed suicide, and his head turns out to be in the bleeding delivery box of courier Hong Jae (Ryu Deok Hwan), who really shouldn't have opened the package this time. Before the shocked youth can digest what's going on, he gets called back to the office, where the package's sender Baek Jung (Baek Yoon Shik) is waiting to kill him. After narrowly escaping death, he calls his reporter sister Hong Joo (Park Ye Jin), who immediately smells a story and asks him to hold onto the head. Hong Jae hides the head and walks right back into the hands of Baek Jung. Armed with the head, Hong Joo goes on a desperate one-woman mission to save her brother, and uncover the crime ring behind the mess.

Despite the rising stakes and rolling heads, Head isn't an emotional downer like most of the other saving-family Korean crime dramas out there. Writer-director Jo Woon livens up the potentially grisly proceedings with a streak of wry, wacky humor that gets you laughing even when people are facing deadly situations. Hong Jae and Hong Joo are two normal people thrown into an extraordinary pickle, but they take the fight for their lives in stride. Hong Jae finds time to mouth off even while half naked and covered in butcher cut marks, and Hong Joo throws caution to the wind remarkably early on. They don't spend too much time feeling sorry for themselves, and hence the audience doesn't have too, either.

Ryu Deok Hwan pretty much has these types of roles down pat, while Park Ye Jin gets to pull out her against-type Family Outing spunk. Baek Yoon Shik is even better as the cold professional killer determined to finish his job - but worried that his wife will found out what he's up to. Oh Dal Soo also clocks impressive mileage with his limited screentime playing two characters, both equally strange. Danny Ahn is the obvious weakest link in the cast as the newscaster friend, but just his random casting alone is odd enough to fit the movie's tone.

There's a Jang Jin-like tone to Head in the way it mashes together drama, comedy, satire, and car accidents. Jo Woon also integrates a media angle into the story that pays off well. Like the crime at hand, the film is a bit strange and messy, and the dots don't always connect smoothly, but it's brisk and entertaining the whole way through. And you get to see Oh Dal Soo's head in a box.
