Written and directed by Nakano Ryo (Capturing Dad), the curiously titled Her Love Boils Bathwater won Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress at the 40th Japan Academy Prize. Acclaimed actress Miyazawa Rie (Pale Moon) delivers another luminous performance as a mother who suddenly learns that her days are numbered. The offbeat yet moving film co-stars award-winning teen actress Sugisaki Hana (Pieta in the Toilet) as her daughter, as well as Odagiri Joe and Matsuzaka Tori.

Kono Futaba (Miyazawa Rie) has been doing her best to support the household ever since her feckless husband (Odagiri Joe) ran off a year ago. Then, she's diagnosed with terminal illness. With little time left but much to do, she determinedly sets out to prepare her timid bullied daughter Azumi (Sugisaki Hana) for a life without her. First, Futaba tracks down her husband, who now has a young daughter in tow. Next, she makes the family work together to reopen the bathhouse business. Finally, she must reveal a long-held family secret to Azumi.

【あらすじ】

 What a terrific film!!! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Things have been going badly for Kono Futaba (Miyazawa Rie). Her husband (Odagiri Joe) left her for a younger woman. She was forced to close the family's public bath business. Her introverted daughter (Sugisaki Hana) is getting bullied at school. And now, shockingly, she learns that she has Stage 4 cancer, giving her only a short while left to live. How does she respond to these tragedies? How would you respond? Futaba gets busy.

Writer-director Nakano Ryo has a powerful story to tell and tells it brilliantly. 'Her Love Boils Bathwater' easily could have been a mopey tale of woe, but instead is a compelling, surprising, and exhilarating film, as we watch Futaba leave her indelible mark on multiple people. In spinning his tale, director Nakano reminds us what an important difference each of us can make in the lives of those around us. Don't miss this film, but bring along a handkerchief. You'll need it.

 Twists and turns with constant surprises Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is a difficult film to review because much of its strength relies on twists and turns in the plot that catch you unawares. A review could easily become a gigantic spoiler although on a second viewing you realise there are clues to the twists and turns peppered throughout the film.

The basic story is of a mother, Futaba Kono (played by Rie Miyazawa) who is diagnosed with an incurable cancer and has only a few months to live. In this time there is much to sort out. A husband who disappeared a year ago has to be traced to restart the family bathhouse business. The daughter is mercilessly bullied at school and needs to become more assertive. (The way in which she stands up to the bullies is a sheer delight, especially the embarrassment of the class teacher who should have prevented the bullying.) Most important of all, central to the film, is the revealing and resolving of a family secret.

Futaba is an assertive and occasionally agressive woman who tackles the problems with great force, although there are many puzzles on the way. Who is the mysterious woman who sends the family a fresh spider crab on 25th April each year? Why does Futaba so quickly form a strong emotional bond with a hitchhiker to whom she gives a lift?

This is a film about motherhood, but not as we normally think of it. Perhaps absence of mothers is a better description. In one of the final twists and turns we discover what has motivated Futaba.

In the final part of the film we see a formerly active and assertive woman hospital bound and near death with one poignant moment of despair. A superb piece of acting by Rie Miyazawa.

I would challenge you to watch this film with dry eyes throughout.
