YesAsia Editorial Description

This collection includes four films by acclaimed filmmaker Kore-eda Hirokazu.

Maborosi (1995)
Maborosi is Kore-eda Hirokazu's impressive first foray into fictional storytelling. He turns his documentary director's eye on the rugged landscape of the Western Japanese coast, which serves as a starkly sublime backdrop for a tale of one young woman's grievous loss and promise for spiritual renewal. The film draws on the traditions of Japan's past directorial masters Ozu and Mizoguchi, but it's also full of gorgeous moments that are purely Kore-eda's own. Twentysomething Yumiko (Esumi Makiko, Pistol Opera) and her husband Ikuo (Asano) live in a small, run-down apartment in Osaka with their infant son. The young couple seems content with their life, but when Ikuo inexplicably commits suicide, Yumiko's entire world falls apart around her. Accepting an arranged marriage in a small fishing village, Yumiko and her child attempt a fresh start. Although she soon comes to love the raw beauty of her new home, Yumiko remains haunted by the memory of Ikuo and the mystery surrounding his sudden death.

After Life (1998)
Kore-eda Hirokazu's 1998 classic After Life quietly examines life and death through the unique setting of a stopover at heaven's entrance. After a person dies, they spend three days at a way station during which time they select one single precious memory that they can bring with them for eternity. From their quiet and humble office, counselors at the way station receive new souls each week and help them pass through. They listen to the different stories, both colorful and commonplace, of the recently departed and guide them towards selecting a memory that will be recreated on film.

Nobody Knows (2004)
Nobody Knows' leading man Yagira Yuya, only 14 at the time, defeated the likes of Tony Leung, Tom Hanks and Geoffrey Rush to win the Best Actor Award at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. Nobody Knows tells of a family in Tokyo where four children live with their mother in a small apartment. All the children have different fathers and don't attend school, and three are living in hiding from the landlord. One day, their mother decides to go away to look for her boyfriend, and leaves her eldest son Akira (Yagira Yuya) a note and a little money to take care of his siblings in her temporary absence. But when the mother fails to return, the children are left to survive on their own, thus beginning their survival tale, one that nobody knows.

Still Walking (2008)
Kore-eda Hirokazu examines life, death, and family in Still Walking, which has been compared to the works of Ozu Yasujiro. Based on Kore-eda's own novel, the film brings together the talented ensemble cast of Abe Hiroshi (Trick), Harada Yoshio (Hana), Kiki Kirin (Tokyo Tower - Mom & Me, and Sometimes Dad), Natsukawa Yui (Hana), and You (Nobody Knows) to play a typically estranged family gathered for a one-day reunion. Through light banter, bitter bickering, and banal bustle, Still Walking subtly reveals the ties and tension, memories and misunderstandings, that make up the modern family.
