Creator: Nobuhiko Obayashi

How to describe Nobuhiko Obayashi's indescribable 1977 movie House? As a psychedelic ghost tale? A stream-of-consciousness bedtime story? An episode of Scooby-Doo as directed by Mario Bava? Any of the above will do for this hallucinatory head trip about a schoolgirl who travels with six classmates to her ailing aunt's creaky country home and comes face-to-face with evil spirits, a demonic house cat, a bloodthirsty piano, and other ghoulish visions, all realized by Obayashi via a series of mattes, animation, and collage effects. Equal parts absurd and nightmarish, House might have been beamed to Earth from some other planet. Never before available on home video in the United States, it's one of the most exciting cult discoveries in years.

Director Obayashi Nobuhiko's film 'House' surely is among the campiest movies I've ever seen. A high school girl nicknamed Gorgeous, accompanied by six of her high school girlfriends (all of whom have nicknames like Fantasy, Kung Fu, and Prof), travels to the rural home of her aunt, a woman who's fiance was killed in action during the Second World War. She's now an invalid living alone in her huge old home.

The girls are excited to spend their vacation in the country, but soon, one by one, they go missing. And as each one disappears, Gorgeous' aunt becomes ever more youthful. You can see where this is heading...

What is distinctive about 'House' is not this rather typical horror movie plot. No, what makes the film unforgettable (for good or for bad) is the wildly psychedelic manner in which the story is presented. I'm not sure whether one could find a single frame in the movie that doesn't look downright weird. Groovy music, cheap special effects, pop culture references (a knock-off Tora-san makes a brief appearance), peculiar camera angles, candy-color backdrops, this film doesn't miss a trick.

Perhaps the strangest aspect of the movie, upon reflection, is that it was released in 1977. This psychedelic stuff was played out long before then; 'House' seems like it would have been much more at home in 1967 than in 1977. I really enjoyed this trippiest (and cheesiest) of all horror films, but how you will react to it will depend entirely upon your tolerance for camp.
