A very underrated album!
With Goto Maki's dramatic (but great) direction in music in 2006 with her single 'Glass no Pumps' made me into the fan I am today.
'How to use SEXY' is an amazing mix of r'n'b flavoured pop with a touch of slow, sensual ballads. Goto explores various genres, and tests her vocal ability in completely different contexts of songs, like 'How to use LONELINESS', a Bhangre inspired dance hit, and 'LIFE' an Orchestra set ballad. The cover art for the regular edition is also quite special. The booklet included with the CD is almost like a mini photobook. There is some VERY professional shots (although I'm still getting my head around the covered in dirt look, I don't know why they decided to go with that, but that is only a few shots in the booklet), but overall it's great visual eye candy. Overall I'd give it a 9/10, and for songs I'd recommend (that weren't released as singles), How to use LONELIENESS, GIVE ME LOVE, City Wind, and LIFE. It's definitely ask everyone to try the album out, as it a great album! Buy it! |

Well done Maki-chan.
Personally (and I don't know why), I didn't think I would enjoy this CD. It only had 10 tracks and I wasn't impressed with Goto's image in the media at that time. I know that I shouldn't judge her music by that... but gah, I couldn't help myself.
Soo I bought this NOT with high hopes. I liked Some Boys! Touch and Glass no Pumps, so I knew I would at least enjoy those two. Oh, and Secret as well. I gave it a first listen when my friend was over (she isn't into Asian music) and the first thing she said was "Oh my god, that sounds like Nelly Furtado or Justin Timberlake!". I started to agree, and was sort of almost bowled-over at how different Maki-chan sounded. A good different though! A very very good different. Good album, worth the price even though it has only 10 tracks (which by the way for those who dont know, is quite rare for a Hello! Project release. Usually they have 11 - 15 tracks) but is full of modern, dancey and slow songs. Very good indeed. |

review
Initially, i was a bit dismayed by the lack of tracks for another major album (10 tracks) but the album turned out very awesome.
Okay, the album title seems kinda off with the bold "How to use Sexy" and with her polished sexy look but people seem to forget 'sexy' was promoted since her Morning Musume years. I have to be honest, i bought the Limited edition with some thought i would only listen to her two singles "Some Boys Touch!" and "Glass Pumps" because i never tried an album from Goto until now. I really got interested after her single "Secret" which was a really mellow ballad away from the sultry drop dead hot music videos. If you were keeping track, she left out her post "single best" work "in my life" away. It's probably because it doesn't match the theme, but its a good single too... Starting the album is "How to Use Lonliness," a upbeat track with some sampling from her singles. It really stood out and i liked it alot, and it feels like a club music (don't turn your Bass on too high). And then "Give me love" was also a great follow up. Overall the beginning seems to have that energy for clubs and it slowly transitions to mellow songs like "Secret" and "Life". I am really prepared to give this album a 10 out of 10; the experiement from two different audiences as a pop singer brings new expectations. Like instead offering music to the general population, she seems to refine it down to adult contemporary. This album partrayeda nice transition from that, so her next work should be interesting. The DVD material was good too, especially for fans because i'm not sure those versions of her music videos have been released yet. Although most of it is eye candy, there is a must watch interview which is kind of not short, and making of the album sleeves which is pretty nice too as Goto is very photogenic (my opinion). After i became really serious in writing reviews, i don't give much 10 out of 10's but this one striked me as a very appealing pop album. |
