YesAsia Editorial Description

Earlier this year in the spring, JJ Lin suddenly lost his voice on the night of his concert in Beijing. He managed to get through that show, but fatigue and illness had taken a great toll on his vocal cords, forcing the singer to step away from the stage and return to Singapore for rest and recovery for most of the year. JJ used this low period as inspiration for his highly anticipated new album, Hundred Days. JJ expressed that the night he lost his voice felt as long as 100 days. Lyricist Yao Ruo Long put JJ's emotions and experiences into words in the title single Hundred Days. Other new tracks on the popular singer-songwriter's seventh album include Go! featuring Taiwan rap guru MC Hotdog and Love Chronicles, the theme song of the Chinese cartoon series Kong Long Bao Bei Long Shen Yong Shi.

100天前 誰也無法預測會發生什麼
這經歷的100天 過了多久都無法遺忘……

不再輕易放手 可以一起擁抱的未來

Professional Review of "Hundred Days"

February 24, 2010

This professional review refers to Hundred Days (X Valentine Edition) (CD+DVD)
Tragedy has a way of inspiring art, and that's certainly the case for JJ Lin in the past year. After everything the Singaporean R&B singer-songwriter went through in 2009, he's back in a big way with Hundred Days, his 7th full-length album. Composed and co-produced by JJ, the album takes a less personal approach than fans might expect, and pleases more as a pop album than a work resulting from tragedies and losses. Fans will be glad to hear JJ's voice again after the vocal cord injury, but JJ's version of pop-R&B may not lure many new fans.

Not only is the album's musical style itself a generally pleasing blend of JJ's pop and R&B sensibilities, the album's lyrics also remain romance-driven like most pop songs. The titular song A Hundred Days (Track 2) is a typical romance ballad in not only JJ's composition, but in the lyrics by Yau Ruo Lung as well. The song itself is serviceable as a pop ballad, and JJ's vocal performance is as good as ever, but it feels like a waste when an album doesn't even use its titular song to reflect on its inspirations.

JJ does reflect a little bit on his life in Go! (Track 3), the only Chinese-language song in which he serves as lyricist (though MC Hotdog provides the rap lyrics). Here, JJ offers up lyrics about looking to the future after tough times without directly referring to his personal life. Musically, it's a return to a more traditional R&B style that JJ sounds quite comfortable in, and MC Hotdog's rap doesn't intrude, though it's also unnecessary. The other song featuring JJ's lyrics is Still Moving Under Gunfire (Track 12), the English version of opening track X (Track 1). Dramatizing his struggle into a battle of sorts, the lyrics contain the same old cliches about looking to religion for hope while also suffering from an oversimplistic composition that makes it sound incomplete.

JJ's work is the most solid when he sticks to pop ballads, and that's the dominant genre of the album. While there are traditional romance ballads like Back to Back (Track 6) and Turn (Track 10), which are both solid but unspectacular, he also offers a few pieces that manage to stand out while playing by the rules. For some reason, JJ decides to insert a minute-long interlude Twilight (Track 4) before Obsession (Track 5), a Latin-flavored ballad with allusions to the Twilight series. With a hint of Western exoticism and a stellar vocal performance by JJ, Obsession makes a good centerpiece to the album. Despite a total lack of ambition compared to Obsession, the jazz-R&B ballad One, By One (Track 8) succeeds not only thanks to an affecting composition by JJ, but also because of the catchy lyrics by fellow singer-songwriter Rynn Lim. JJ's vocal relies too much on lounge-style ad-lib to create emotions, but the song itself has plenty of breakout potential on the pop charts.

As proven by X/Still Moving Under Gunfire, JJ is hit-and-miss when it comes to other genres on the album. Another one of those misses is Love Chronicles, an ill-conceived attempt at the rock genre. Composed and produced by JJ himself, the arrangement and the composition play like a rock song, but JJ's vocal delivery is far from fitting for the power he's aiming for, and the result is a weak rock song that doesn't really register in any aspect. Faring far better is the Bollywood-inspired electronic dance song Copycat (Track 7). Seemingly reliant on its bombastic arrangement, the lyrics by Dr. Moon also takes a few swipes at people who lack originality - including idol singers - giving the song more depth than it suggests.

Unfortunately, Hundred Days doesn't have much room for a more personal type of artistic expression. The album is generally pleasing with a good mix of R&B, pop, and other genres, but it also lacks truly spectacular work. As one can expect, the production values and JJ's vocal performance are stellar, but they don't elevate JJ to the heights of the more acclaimed R&B musicians in the Chinese pop world. As his life returns to normal, perhaps JJ can concentrate on how to take his music to a new level in the next year. For now, Hundred Days can serve as a return that will be much welcomed by his fans.

The Sweetest Voice I`ve ever known Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I normally don`t buy a lot of Mandarin music, because I don`t understand the lyrics. But when JJ Lin sings you don`t have to be a speaker of Mandarin to feel moved. He has one of the most beautiful, expressive voices in pop today. I know he will go a long way, and I can`t wait to listen to new music from him. In the meantime, this album is as good a buy as anything you will ever find. The First Few 100 Days and Back to Back Hug are songs I never ever tire of. In fact all the songs are so good, you can`t stop listening to them. I love this boy and hope he will always be in the business! You go JJ Lin! There`s noone quite like you.
