YesAsia Editorial Description

The tumultuous life of Korea's most famous gisaeng (geisha) comes to screen in the acclaimed KBS period epic Hwang Jin Yi starring Ha Ji Won. Born to a blind gisaeng, Hwang Jin Yi was sent to a remote mountain temple at a young age, as her mother hoped that her daughter would be able to escape the life she led. Fate, however, works in strange ways. One day, seven-year-old Jin Yi comes across a gisaeng performance. Captured by their beautiful singing and dancing, young Jin Yi runs away the next day and enters a gisaeng training school. From that day on, she walks a lonely path, eventually becoming the Joseon era's top gisaeng. In the hands of director Kim Chul Kyu (More Beautiful Than Flowers) and writer Yoon Sun Joo (The Immortal Lee Soon Shin), Hwang Jin Yi paints a sensitive portrait of a strong, unyielding woman who saw life in beautiful colors, ahead of her time in a relentlessly class-based society.

The Hwang Jin Yi soundtrack comes with 16 tracks, capturing the atmosphere and emotions of the drama. Theme song "Bad Person" (Track 2) is a touching ballad sung by Baek Ji Young, accompanied by a 24-person string orchestra. Other songs in the album include KCM's "Year" (Track 8) and Kim Dong Wook's Ru (Track 15). Listen also for the instrumentals of renowned haegeum (Korean fiddle) player Kim Ae Ra, a master in both traditional Korean court and folk music.

Soulful " New Age " - wonderful selection. Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I bought this CD after watching the drama. I was not disappointed.

The dominant string music was just the right blend of melancholy and playfulness. Smooth and pensive to the ear. The vocals were apt and enjoyable. If you close your eyes to listen intently to the background - you may easily be transported to the New Age/Pop Opera genre - without the kookiness that most listeners tend to associate with. I highly recommend this drama and its musical pieces. Can't wait to enjoy them on my ipod !

Very pleasant music Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
There are some beautiful ballads on the "Hwang Jin Yi", but what really makes this album worth buying are all the glorious orchestral instrumental numbers. The music is so richly atmospheric that I hope I get an opportunity to watch this TV series. Recommended.
