YesAsia Editorial Description

Writer-director Kitagawa Eriko – also one of the most acclaimed writers in Japanese television – goes to Paris in her second directorial effort I Have to Buy New Shoes. Once again produced by director Iwai Shunji, Shoes is a light, unassumingly romance drama about a brief fling between a young photographer lost in Paris and an older newspaper writer who helps him. A real resident of Paris for over a decade, Nakayama Miho (Love Letter) gives a radiant performance as a wounded woman who still has room for a bit of romance in her life, while Mukai Osamu (Paradise Kiss) exudes irresistible youthful charm as the traveler. The film also co-stars Kiritani Mirei (Ace Attorney) as the photographer's sister and Ayano Go (Rurouni Kenshin) as her boyfriend. The film's score is composed by kotringo and supervised by Sakamoto Ryuichi.

Photographer Sen (Mukai Osamu) travels to Paris for the first time with his sister Suzume (Kiritani Mirei). However, Suzume abandons Sen as soon as they arrive to be with her boyfriend (Ayano Go), who has been living in Paris for the past half year. Amidst the confusion, Sen meets Aoi (Nakayama Miho), an older single woman who writes for a Japanese newspaper in Paris. After Aoi helps Sen recover his passport, the two go out and spends a night on the town. As Suzume tries to salvage her long-distance relationship with her boyfriend, Sen finds himself falling in love with Aoi.

Silly title; lovely romance Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
The odd title "I Have to Buy New Shoes" might suggest yet another superficial "Sex and the City" knock-off. Fortunately, writer-director Kitagawa Eriko has something entirely different in mind. And with gorgeous Nakayama Miho in the foreground and scenic Paris as a backdrop, Kitagawa has chosen just the right trappings for this chaste romance.

Commercial photographer Sen (Mukai Osamu) accompanies his sister Suzume (Kiritani Mirei) on a three-day trip to Paris, but sneaky Suzume ditches her brother in order to spend the holiday with her artist boyfriend (Ayano Go). Alone and lost in the big city, Sen encounters Aoi (Nakayama Miho), a long-time Paris resident who helps Sen find the way to his hotel. On the surface, Sen and Aoi are attractive people with interesting careers. But scratch those glossy surfaces and one finds two lonely, broken people, both struggling with loss and disappointment. Despite their age difference, mutual need leads to friendship between the two, which blossoms into yearning for a deeper connection.

While the subplot involving sister Suzume and her boyfriend proves distracting and disposable, the delicate dance between Sen and Aoi becomes increasingly engaging as the film progresses. Much of the charm of this relationship arises from the intersection of the hunky earnestness of Mr. Mukai and the finely nuanced performance of Miss Nakayama, who convinces as a profoundly wounded woman slowly emerging from her sleepwalk through life. Throw in a stroll down the Champs-Elysees and an afternoon on the Seine and you have a romance worth watching.
