DAY6's Japanese debut
When Korean idols advance into the Japanese music market, they almost always start out by remaking Korean hits. This is understandably the safest route as it requires less investment and leverages songs that are already familiar to Japanese K-pop fans. The notable exception to this standard remake strategy is JYP Entertainment. Both 2PM and GOT7 debuted in Japan with original singles, and Twice's first Japanese single was an original song. Following in the footsteps of their labelmates, DAY6 debuts in Japan with the original single If -Mata Aetara-.

As one of the few (instrument-playing) bands in the K-pop idol industry, DAY6 has consistently put out quality self-produced music since debuting in 2015. The young band carries over their sound and songwriting to their first Japanese single. DAY6's releases tend to vacillate between alternative and more pop-leaning numbers, and If -Mata Aetara- happily falls in the former category.

If -Mata Aetara- ranks among my favorite DAY6 title songs. The moody uptempo rock number has a Britpop vibe with strong backbeats and syncopation. The clean and explosive chorus brings an impassioned edge to the regretful and resentful lyrics reflecting on the "ifs" of a relationship that ended in pain. The sudden rap break also works surprisingly well, adding variety and volatility to the song.

While If -Mata Aetara- is about love lost, Baby, It's Okay warmly professes love, albeit through some supremely generic lyrics. The song catches attention straight away by opening cold with the silky high-pitched entreaty of "Baby, let me see your eyes." While clearly a B-side, the song has an interesting melody progression that leads into a pop rock chorus with nice falsetto flourishes.

If -Mata Aetara- represents a promising start to DAY6's Japanese discography. And if CNBLUE's and FTIsland's Japanese releases are any indication, Korean idol rock bands seem to have the space to be harder and more experimental in Japan, so we can expect even better things to come.
