YesAsia Editorial Description

Originally released in 1952, Kurosawa Akira's Ikiru is widely regarded as one of film's most moving dramatic achievements. While Kurosawa is known in the west primarily for his samurai movies, Ikiru stands up favorably to any other work produced by the auteur over his long and storied career. Shimura Takashi plays a meek civil servant diagnosed with terminal cancer. This event brings him to the realization that his life, up to this point, has been virtually devoid of meaning. He seeks meaning and comfort form his family and activities, but remains haunted by a feeling of emptiness. Ultimately, he comes upon the answer, performing a sublime act of generosity and kindness, and at the same time coming to terms with the meaning of his life.

A Great film marred by 'Engrish' subtitles Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
Akira Kurosawas' films should be in everyones Asian Cinema Library. Unfortunately, the only overseas available titles, are on the Mei Ah label. And they are all marred by clumsy and awkward subtitles. (I know, I have all of them). If youre not fussy about that, you will will enjoy the Mei Ah line of Kurosawa films. But, if poor subs irritate you, and spoil the pleasure of these classic films, then avoid these Kurosawa Mei Ah titles, and wait for something better. Or, plop the money down for the expensive American releases. I mean, were talking Kurosawa here...

Beautiful, Kurosawa's touch seen instantly Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This movie is just beautiful. Kurosawa has directed so many beautiful films but many still see him for his samurai films. This is a powerful story about a man's will to do something meaningful with his life while he still can. You may cry. The important message is to live. LIVE. Live a life worth living and be happy. Appreciate it while you can. Leave behind something you can be satisfied with.
