Exit director Chienn Hsiang collaborates again with lead actress Chen Shiang Chyi for his sophomore effort Increasing Echo, which was nominated for Best Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay at the 58th Golden Horse Film Awards. Based on Wang Ding Guo's short story Yao Jing, the Taiwan film co-starring Chen Yi Wen (A Sun) examines middle-age and marital crisis through the lives of a couple trapped in a loveless marriage.
Model housewife Mrs. Yan (Chen Shiang Chyi) spends her days grocery shopping, cooking and running errands while pursuing a sense of inner tranquility. Mr. Yan (Chen Yi Wen), who is bored at work but has nowhere to go when he's not at work, also spends his days cultivating a stable but distant marriage. Years ago, Mr. Yan had a brief affair with his secretary. One day, Mrs. Yan accidentally learns that the woman from her husband's past has been admitted into a nursing home. Their stagnant life is suddenly shaken by the ripples of change.
