YesAsia Editorial Description

One of TVB's biggest hits of the 90s,Instinct features the strong cast of Adam Cheng, Ekin Cheng, Roger Kwok, Leo Ku, Nadia Chan, Amy Kwok, Kiki Sheung and Paul Chu. In yet another acclaimed piece after the popular The Greed Man in 1992, Adam Cheng plays a big-time businessman in a tangle of complex relationships. He pairs up with Kiki Sheung for the first time, presenting a very touching love story to the viewers. Ekin Cheng and Nadia Chan, TVB's golden couple in the 90s, pair up for the fifth time in memorable roles while Roger Kwok, well-known for playing good and righteous guys like that in Square Pegs, takes everyone by surprise for his magnificent portrayal as the villain. This is also one of the few TVB dramas to feature TV host-turned-singer Leo Ku, who proves to be just as good in acting.

Ever since TVB series started coming out in VCDs, I have waited for this series in particular to come out. I remember watching this series and not being able to turn off the VCR (and this was on a school night). The wait is worth it because now I have the DVD. This is definitely one of the most memorable and heart-wrenching modern series you'll ever watch.

Spoiler: I hate the ending and watching the DVD, I still hate the ending, but if the series did not end the way it did, I would not still be thinking about it 12 years after the first time I watched the series.

You have Adam Cheng as Wong Tin. He's the typical business tycoon you have in every modern epic. He's is capable of moving the HK stock market at his will. But like most businessmen, success at work means a tragic family life.

The younger generation consists of Ekin Cheng as Ah Lung and Roger Kwok as Ah Ching. Both grew up like brothers. Ah Lung is motivated by friendship, loyalty and love, while Ah Ching's motivation is money and power.

Ah Lung falls in love Ah Leet played by Nnadia Chan. This is one of the best love stories portrayed in TVB history. Although it seems like Ah Lung is the one that rescues Ah Leet from her troubles in life; at Ah Lungs lowest points in life, it was Ah Leet that was there to encourage and protect him. Ah Leet is the woman that Ah Lung loves the most, but she will also be the one that makes Ah Lung the saddest.

Ah Ching's ultimate goal in life is to gain money and power. Living with Ah Lung's family most of his life, he's always guarded himself against the love of a family. His dad was imprisoned for 20 years because he took the fall when triads tried to implicate him and Ah Lung's dad with drugs. His ruthlessness leads to his betrayal to Wong Tin and Ah Lung and ultimately in the end, causing his downfall.

I'm not going to go through all the characters, but I just want to say, that every actor and actress did so well in the series. Examples:
1. Adam Cheng - Wong Tin's internal struggle with his wife's infidelty and his daughter's (Amy Kwok)misunderstanding and hatred towards him.
2. Roger Kwok - This is one of the first series Roger was in, before he played Ah Wong or Ma Chi Keung. I think for a newby he did quite well as the bad guy, hiding behind the knowing smile.
3. Amy Kwok - She had a few movies under her belt already, i.e. Greed of a Man, and her character is similar where she loves Ah Lung, but her love is not reciprocated. Her crying scenes, honestly compared to a lot of movies today, is one of the most convincing. Maybe that's why she always has crying scenes in any movie she does.
4. Nnadia Chan - She's so sad in this movie, your heart just aches for her. She portrays the lonely, self-esteem deprived woman so well that you have to ask how the story-writer can give her such an ending.
5. Bad Guys - All the bad business guys that go against Wong Tin in the series. I swear they were all in their prime! I think that's why a lot of bad guys in recent series are still the older generation actors.

Anyway, this is long, but I hope everyone enjoys this series.

Absolutely a Classic Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This series had a powerful opening and a very touching ending. The chemistry between Nnadia Chan and Ekin Cheng was flawless. They were very natural and gentle with each other and, in my opinion, had performed some of the most memorable scenes in TVB history. As always, Adam Cheng gives his all. Leo Ku was a surprise. He and the actress who played his sister provided many light-hearted moments. Roger Kwok performed well, but he was not a Gallen Lo or Deric Wan.

I love the songs in this series, especially the sub by Ekin. Nnadia Chan, also, has a powerful and soothing voice. It's too bad she doesn't release many albums.

I really love the ending. It's one of the few endings that TVB pulled off very well. Though, I know that many people have still have opinions about the final fate of each characters.
