Embracing negativity
There are a lot of great Cantopop singers in Hong Kong, but Janice Vidal's songs always hit differently. Janice comforts our wounded soul with nine healing pieces in It's OK To Be Sad.

The song title says it all – It's OK To Be Sad (Track 1). Janice encourages us to not neglect our emotions, and to embrace the negativity in ourselves: "It's ok to be sad, it's ok to lose your mind. Life is not a childhood fantasy, sometimes it appears to have no mercy." With Janice's gentle timbre on top of a lighthearted melody, the empowering It's OK To Be Sad heals hearts with a calming ambience that makes you want to take it easy on everything.

Apart from It's OK To Be Sad, Wyman Wong also wrote lyrics for "She Wrote All Night" (Track 2), "Take Your Trash With You" (Track 3) and "Stupid Squad" (Track 6). Known as the new version of Justin Lo's megahit "Hard Life," "She Wrote All Night" tells the story of a dramatic, unrequited love from a female perspective. Janice's take on the song happens to be vocally less powerful, but more subtly moving and romantic. The chic rock plug "Take Your Trash With You" coolly sings about moving on quickly after breakup, while the upbeat "Stupid Squad" is about cherishing all our loving friends who allow us to be ourselves.

"Life Plan" (Track 4) encourages us to step out of our comfort zone and be brave and passionate to venture into new journeys. Janice also collaborates with Jason Chan for the first time for the duet version of "Life Plan" (Track 9). The singer soulfully sings in a lower-pitch tone in the jazzy, orchestral "Half-Step Down" (Track 5), reminding us to take our time to observe our surroundings. She bids farewell to a fading love in the pop ballad "Final Boarding Call" (Track 7), and expresses gratitude to those who have been with her on her journey in "Blink of an Eye" (Track 8).

Through It's OK To Be Sad, Janice is no longer singing only about love, but also the hardships in life and social issues that inspire and resonate with the listener's thoughts.
