YesAsia Editorial Description
Writer/director Kim Ho Jun follows up his highly successful 2003 film My Little Bride with the controversial teen pregnancy movie Jenny, Juno! The film centers on the title characters of Jenny (Park Min Ji) and Juno (Kim Hye Sung), two fifteen year old middle school students whose one night of romance has dramatic consequences for both their lives. After careful deliberation, the two expectant parents decide to keep the baby. However, they also decide to keep the pregnancy a secret from everyone, even their families. But just how long will Jenny and Juno be able to hide the truth from their parents?
Although much debate has raged over the content of the film, the truth is that Jenny, Juno isn't overtly sexual in the least (the actual sex occurs off-screen). Instead, the filmmakers focus their attention not only on the issues and concerns related to teen pregnancy, but also tap into the fantasy of parenthood itself, taking the typical romantic comedy plot into unexplored territory for the genre. And despite whatever controversy it enflamed, Jenny, Juno is a cutesy romance sure to spark conversation between parents and their teenage children!

Can we hope for a sequel?
Can we hope for a sequel?
"Jenny, Juno" is that very rare thing -- an affectionate film about teen pregnancy. The movie does many things very well. Its central characters, Jenny (Park Min Ji) and Juno (Kim Hye Sung), are sweet, smart kids who have made a big mistake. Park and Kim do a wonderful job of bringing these characters to life; they have an amazing on-screen chemistry that makes their relationship very believable. Equally important, the film never becomes salacious or exploitative. We never see Jenny and Juno exchange more than an innocent kiss.
In its first hour, "Jenny, Juno" does a fine job of introducing its characters, developing their friendship, and revealing their reactions to Juno's unexpected pregnancy. The last 45 minutes are a bit more problematic, as the film occasionally strays into sentimentality and employs the overused device of depicting the children as astonishingly mature and the parents as annoyingly childish. I greatly appreciated the delicacy with which "Jenny, Juno" handles its central theme and the winning performances by Park and Kim. I also was heartened by the movie's strong, but subtle, anti-abortion message. I recommend "Jenny, Juno" for a general audience. Hint to the filmmakers: It would be very interesting to see a sequel that shows Jenny and Juno coping with the challenges of parenthood. |

Love knows no boundaries
Love knows no boundaries
Although I like to watch most Korean movies I almost skipped this film, due to its content regarding teenage pregnancy. But now that I have finally seen it (decision made!) and have now realized how misguided I was by my premeditation, that this teen romance comedy drama is probably one of the best Korean movies I have ever seen. On par easily with "My Sassy Girl", this is one brilliantly acted and all round entertaining movie! And not depressing, either!
Certainly this is a controversial film (subject makes that by default), and I think due to the controversial aspect and merited sober importance of its theme, is the main reason why "Jenny and Juno" could always slip short of being an highly recommended movie for all to watch. Its going to be a bit twitchy to view, as its concerning the fact that a teenage pregnancy is just not the best way to go. Certainly very true. But with "Jenny, Juno", instead of being a deep social issues movie about such a subject, this is more an emotionally sensitive, tender, lively and very sweet romantic movie about two young people deeply in love. And instead of showing a melodramatic relationship of where they each fall out of love into depravity when the pregnancy is discovered, Jenny and Juno both accept their situation, (certainly want the baby) and decide to love and care for each other at all costs. Everything in the way this film is acted, camera shot, produced and the music used, too, makes this a very (pause for thought to check if this word is right... yep, it is) 'beautiful' story. Okay, yes, this is surely something to avoid at this age or within a lacking framework and foundation where supporting a new life is going to be difficult. But, "Jenny, Juno" is a story of pure love and thoughtfulness with the two young people portrayed here, and it keeps to a romantic pitch and having a carefully scripted plot line, doesn't ever waver towards becoming over offensive, derogatory, irresponsible or over flippant. And the plot flow and the hook with the spirit of this film is spot on - you just wouldn't want to get up and put the kettle on. As for the film as a whole, its superbly acted by Min Ji Park and Hye Sung Kim as Jenny and Juno, and with a top supportive cast as the two sets of parents, this is top drawer stuff! The whole of the film is virtually seen through the eyes of Jenny and Juno's romance and of their dilemma (who are so in love they are like two peas in a pod), as if all other people around them are like a background blur. A bit like real romance where everything seems to go silent when together with the one you love . Right from the start, too, this is one lively and funny affair, avoiding a doleful critical sort of thematic. Its also straight from the beginning, that you find Jenny is pregnant (there is no melodramatic lead up to it...or melodrama at all,in fact), as she take the dreaded 'litmus' test on herself, and then coy fully confides with Juno what has happened. (Although she is rarely coy in this film!) After a short spell where Juno is unsure what to do (after all, its not as if he had just heard news that he had lost at a game of "Starcraft"!), he eventually commits himself totally to looking after Jenny at all costs - even by romantically saying sorry when he avoided her at first by his shock, and forms the words 'Juno loves Jenny' on the school playing field, for her to see from her class room window. There are many moments of this type of tenderness, that makes this a very heartfelt film. Another thing I liked about this is that its never makes the characters closeted - even though J and J have to hide Jenny's pregnancy at first. All of Jenny and Juno's friends are behind them and the openness and trust portrayed, makes it a tearfully likable movie. The 'wedding' near the end is the capstone of this love! And it is sooooo funny at times! There is a lot of the usual visual humor, but also subtle humor that is so ironic and farcical at times - you could wet yourself laughing at this!. Some of this out of the blue comedy will leave you with watered eyes of laughter, I kid you not! I'd love to mention some, but it would spoil the serendipity and surprise element! Whereas some directors/writers feel it their duty to cover a more deeper and annalistic way to understand the problems of teen pregnancy, or 'over teach' the preventive code (which is great, but there are plenty of those in TV and film), the missing element that can be easily overlooked, is the human story - which should never be watered down for purposes sake - and this film fills that gap with J and J's loving attitude. More than anything with this, though, is Jenny Juno's heartfelt and unconditional love they show to each other, which is the most important message of this film. "Jenny, Juno" is certainly a more romantic, fun and extremely funny film, but still works by making this sensitive area of teenage liaisons a serious situation that certainly needs careful mindedness, and not to let caution be thrown to the wind on a whim. Although I thought originally this wouldn't be one for me, I have ended up loving this film - it story, its positive stance towards an error of judgment, and the 'winning through' attitude it decides on, instead of demonising the two people involved here. Its romantic, sweet, v-e-r-y- funny and one you will watch quite a number of times. If you have never seen this, and love great Korean movies, please get this one - you'll love it, too! |

Young love
Young love
I think that one word can sum up this movie suprisingly well: "cute". This movie is about two young teenagers who have to deal with the very real and serious situation of pregnancy. Their reactions to the situation are quite believeable for kids who are only 15 years old, and they (especially Juno) display quite a bit of responsibility which is practically admirable. The two main actors' on screen chemistry is bubbly and adorable. They are so incredibly cute that you can't help but smile. However, the movie does keep to the light side of things, and the entire movie seems pretty idealistic in terms of how things all work out; someone could easily argue against the realism of the movie. But I think that it works and I believe that the characters are given enough likability to fully justify some almost too-happy scenes (possible spoiler!!!: like the wedding, that was so "spectacular" and optimistic).
Bottom Line: This may not be a great representation of how hard life is and how difficult our decisions are sometimes, but it is a wonderful display of the maturity and love that can teenagers can develop. You really want to believe that Jenny and Juno exist out there somewhere, and that everything will always work out for them in the end. |
