YesAsia Editorial Description

John Woo certainly deserves a place in the history of Hong Kong action cinema. A Better Tomorrow and The Killer are two of his acclaimed early cinematic gems which have become classics by now. John Woo has a genius for aestheticizing violence, blending top-notch martial arts with eye-catching shoot-out sequences to create splendid action scenes. His accomplishment in popularizing heroic films has even paved the way for his entrance into the Hollywood.

A brilliant combination of action and melodrama, A Better Tomorrow stars Chow Yun-Fat and Di Lung as two triad brothers, Mark and Ho, who are betrayed by their sub-ordinates. The late great Leslie Cheung plays a police cadet who feels ashamed of his triad brother Ho. The three eventually form an uneasy alliance to strike back against the triads… with a hailstorm of bullets. The film's violent actions highlight the honor and brotherhood among the iconic characters. Chow Yun-Fat's characterization of Mark - a suave killer who values honor above all - has even become the greatest icon of the heroic bloodshed genre, and a widely-imitated image by filmmakers and fans alike. The film won the Best Picture and Best Actor (Chow Yun-Fat) at the 6th Hong Kong Film Awards.

John Woo's The Killer also has Asian superstar Chow Yun-Fat to play a killer who is not at all cold-blooded. The film features veteran actors Danny Lee and Kenneth Tsang as cops, as well as renowned singer Sally Yeh. The chemistry between John Woo and Chow Yun-Fat continues to interweave the theme of brotherly love into an intriguing plot. This stylish and action-packed film is just as acclaimed as A Better Tomorrow, winning the film the Best Director and Best Film Editing at the 9th Hong Kong Film Awards.

Now you can enjoy these two classics at home in their best quality. A Better Tomorrow and The Killer are digitally remastered with DTS and Dolby sound, now available in brand new collector's edition! The boxset will come with original and newly edited movie trailers, a movie stills photo album, a "Codes of Bullets - 4" booklet, and interviews with Sally Yeh and Kenneth Tsang.

Two greats Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
In this boxset are two timeless films from the Vaults of HK cinema. Though John Woo has gone to Hollywood, he is returning to work with Jau Yun-Faat, on the Red Cliff, some period drama in mainland China. These are 2 films which are a must for fans of the genre, a better tomorrow and the killer. The first features 3 gangsters in 80's HK living the high life of the Haak Se-Wui (black society) which are basically triad gangs. They are into conterfeit notes, and making a profit from them. Waisse Lee is the Dragon Head Boss in the film. Brother of one of the members "Kit" is determined to make it in the police force However when "Ho" Ti-Lung lands in Prison in Taiwan for money smuggling when they are travelling from HK and are double crossed, he spends 3 yrs in jail. Back in HK Kit then meets Ho again when he is released. There is a rift between Ho and Kit which forms, and Ho tries to prove he has given up the triad life. In a shootout, Mark (Jau Yun-Faat) looses a leg and is useless to Waise and the gang. Just watch the film, at the end all 3 team up to take on their former triad. Values in the film show up, as the director is Chrstian, how to be a better person etc.

The Killer stars Jau Yun-Faat, dir. John Woo. Jeff a hitman (Jau Yun-Faat) blinds an attractive club singer and piano player in a shootout following a triad "hit" He then shows remorse as it's an accident. He accepts once last contract killing before he retires from Sidney, his mentor. This is to pay for a cornea transplant so Jennie (Sally Yeh) can see again. The typical John Woo values follow, particularly the contrast between darkness and light. A great part is also played by Shing Fui-On and Paul Yau (dark ruthless triads) and the attire contrasts to Jeff. Watch the ending.

Remaster Quality Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
The remaster quality in this dvd box set is better than the previous versions released by the same company. This time the video pic is much better than before. The trilogy box set of a better tomorrow's is okay, but this version of a better tomorrow is a lot better. The pic is cleaner, better detail, etc... And the DTS sound is also great. The killer remaster quality is the best looking version of all. Previous releases by other companies, or the same does not look as great as this. Whilst not fantastic, but great. The DTS soundtrack for the killer is also the best sounding of all the versions. The sound is very clean, chow yun fat's voice sounds pure and the dialogue sounds great. Of the two movies in this boxset, A better tomorrow has the better video remaster quality, for the DTS sound, the killer has the best sound. THIS BOXSET IS THE BEST REMASTERED VERSION OF THESE TWO MOVIES AVAILABLE. DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED!!

question....... Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
The best films of John Woo but is the transfer and picture nice and crisp because Better Tomorrow Trilogy and John Woo Collection(The Killer/Bullet in the Head) of the classic digitally rematered series was average and had minor problems.
