Screened in competition at the Venice Film Festival, writer-director Tsukamoto Shinya's first samurai film Killing is set in the turbulence of mid-19th century Japan. The cult filmmaker also co-stars in the period drama as an elder samurai who calls Ikematsu Sosuke's young swordsman to action.

Near the end of the Edo period, a country that had enjoyed centuries of relative peace is suddenly shaken awake by unexpected changes. Tsuzuki Mokunoshin (Ikematsu Sosuke) is a young ronin who, like many other samurai of his generation, has never seen action. He helps out at a farming village, where he catches the fancy of local maiden Yu (Aoi Yu). Mokunoshin's life is mostly calm and quiet, but the inevitable tides of change soon reach him in the form of Sawamura (Tsukamoto Shinya), a master swordsman who is heading to Kyoto where turbulence brews. He recruits the reluctant Mokunoshin into his party, but before they can set off, ruffians attack the village. Mokunoshin struggles to draw his sword and fulfill his calling as a samurai.
