Based on a manga series by Kusumi Masayuki, late-night drama Kodoku no Gourmet has a remarkably simple premise: A middle-age businessman travels to various neighborhoods in Tokyo and samples the local gourmet by chance. That simplicity has lent the series endless possibilities for story ideas, and the show's popularity has led TV Tokyo to produce four seasons of it within two short years.
Fortunately, the show's creators have worked hard on keeping the formula fresh even in its fourth season. Each episode retains the same concept – protagonist Goro (Matsushige Yutaka) goes to a new neighborhood, gets hungry and finds a restaurant to eat – but the producers have brought in recognizable character actors like Kohinata Fumiyo (Hero), Sasano Takashi (Yowakutemo Katemasu) and Ishibashi Renji (River's Edge) as guest stars. Goro even gets to leave the Tokyo area in episode five, traveling around an island in Aichi Prefecture in pursuit of a client.
Of course, most audiences watch Kodoku no Gourmet for the food, and season four delivers on all counts. From the ginseng chicken soup of that tiny Korean restaurant in Ginza (episode 1) to the fried fish in the Ebisu restaurant (episode 12), the food looks so delectable that Matsushige probably didn't have much challenge making his "delicious!" face. With fan blogs and restaurant review websites like Gurunavi more popular than ever, it's no surprise that restaurants receive huge boost in business after appearing on the series.
However, Kodoku no Gurume is not just about the food. Each episode depicts a day in the life of our hungry hero as he meets people from all walks of life. These seemingly insignificant slice-of-life stories are often humorous (especially thanks to Goro's dry, pun-filled voiceovers) and amusing, like anecdotes that we hear during meals with friends. Kodoku no Gourmet could easily just be another foodie reality show, but Matsushige Yutaka and writer Taguchi Yoshihiro give the show a humanistic touch that it genuinely needs.
Unlike other food-related dramas like Shinya Shokudou, Kodoku no Gourmet puts the food front and center at the expense of drama. However, that choice actually makes the show more relevant to its audiences than its counterparts. Eating alone has become a way of life for contemporary urbanites, and Kodoku no Gourmet comforts viewers into believing that there is nothing wrong with enjoying meals alone. For his fans, Goro isn't just a character – it's a way of life.
