Song of the Black Sheep
Keyakizaka46 delivers another powerfully empathetic and dissonant teen anthem in their new single Kuroi Hitsuji. As indicated by the title, this song is for all the "black sheep" out there. In comparison to singles like Garasu wo Ware! and Fukyouwaon, the song's sound is softer and more melodic, but the themes are no less incisive and impactful.

Kuroi Hitsuji opens moodily with somber piano chords, and then picks up the tempo in low-pitched verses tightly packed with the suffocating feelings of being that person who doesn't fit in – and doesn't want to. The lyrics offer simple yet specific examples and experiences that connect readily with listeners: taking the long way home to avoid people, the awkward discomfort of after-school interactions.

The catchy chorus sings out the frustration, anguish, resignation and self-contempt of being that troublesome misfit who thinks differently, the one who just can't go with the flow no matter what. The words spill out rapidly, and many of them hurt: "If only I was gone, it'd be fine... If I'm the only one who disagrees, just ignore it... I'm just a nuisance." The middle section of the song poignantly builds up and then breaks down to the devastating declaration of "Everything is my fault…," uttered in a slightly cracking voice.

The song dismisses the clichéd assurances that trying to talk things out will solve the problem or make you feel better, but the story does come to a point of defiant self-acceptance. After the outpouring of helpless anger and negative emotions, an angelic choral interlude leads into the song's finale which rejects unreasonable judgement and the pressure to become a "white sheep" like everyone else. Kuroi Hitsuji's final self-affirming message is of embracing your true and different self, even if it can be troublesome and painful, because that's who you are.
