Fresh from portraying Empress Wu Zetian in the epic 82-episode Empress of China, Fan Bing Bing returns to play another formidable woman in the historical romance Lady Of The Dynasty. This time, the superstar is Yang Guifei, one of the four great beauties in Chinese history. Under the direction of Shi Qing (as well as a supporting group of directors including Zhang Yimou and Tian Zhuang Zhuang), Fan shares the screen with Leon Lai as Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, Wu Chun as his son Li Mao and Joan Chen as Wu Huifei.

At a parade held to celebrate a recent military victory, Emperor Xuanzong spots a beautiful young woman. She turns out to be the teenage Yang Yuhuan, who is betrothed to Xuanzong's son, Li Mao. Wary of the Emperor's growing interest in the young woman, Wu Huifei arranges for Yuhuan to be married off to Li Mao as soon as possible. When palace politics claims Wu Huifei, Li Mao sees an opportunity to rise in succession rank. To this end, he offers Yuhuan to his father as a "gift"...
