After Ajin: Demi-Human, director Motohiro Katsuyuki of Bayside Shakedown fame takes on another fantasy manga adaptation with Laughing Under the Clouds. Based on the manga by Karakara Kemuri, the supernatural period fantasy is set in the early Meiji era when Japanese society was beginning to modernize under a new system. Fukushi Sota (Bleach) stars as a young shrine master who must protect his town from a mystical creature and the competing threats of old and new powers. The film's ikemen cast also includes Furukawa Yuki (Litchi Hikari Club), Johnny's idol Nakayama Yuma (Haunted Campus), Kiriyama Renn (Ju-on: The Final Curse), Daito Shunsuke (Brave Storm), Koseki Yuta (Anonymous Noise), Ichikawa Tomohiro (Principal) and Wakayama Kirato (My Little Nightmare).

As the 14th generation of the Kumo lineage, brothers Tenka (Fukushi Sota), Soramaru (Nakayama Yuma) and Chutaro (Wakayama Kirato) safeguard the Kumo Shrine and their hometown of Otsu in Shiga Prefecture by Lake Biwa. Legend has it that every 300 years, Orochi, a powerful giant serpent, will resurrect and bring great calamity to humankind. To protect their town, the brothers take on the mission of stopping the revival of Orochi. At the same time, the Meiji government also forms a task force to deal with Orochi, and a ninja clan plots to use the power of Orochi to overthrow the new government.
