Produced by Wilson Yip and directed by special effects expert Koan Hui, the 2016 period fantasy epic League of Gods is based on the classic Ming Dynasty novel Investiture of the Gods, an epic tome combining mythological folklore with ancient history. An all-star cast that includes Jet Li, Tony Leung Ka Fai, Fan Bingbing, Louis Koo, Wen Zhang, Huang Xiaoming and Angelababy play the storied deities and demons of Chinese legends, while Jacky Heung (From Vegas to Macau III) takes the central character of Leizhenzi, the young chosen hero who assumes a key role in the uprising against the tyrannical last emperor of the Shang Dynasty.

For the sake of power, King Zhou (Tony Leung Ka Fai) submitted himself to the dark side and rules with an iron fist with the help of consort Daji (Fan Bingbing), a beautiful and blood-thirsty fox demon. Master sorcerer Jiang Ziya (Jet Li) learns that the dark force within King Zhou will soon be reborn as the Black Dragon, and only the Sword of Light wielded by its destined owner can defeat this dark lord. Himself cursed by a reverse-aging spell, Jiang sends Lei (Jacky Heung), the last of the vanquished Wing Tribe, on a mission across the mortal and mystical realms to find the sword. Along the way, Lei meets and allies with mischievous deity Nezha (Wen Zhang), warrior Erlang Shen (Huang Xiaoming) and maiden Blue Butterfly (Angelababy), an automaton spy sent by King Zhou's general Shen Gongbao (Louis Koo).
