YesAsia Editorial Description
Peter Chan directs the biographical sports drama Leap about the history and accomplishments of the China women's national volleyball team. Winning Best Film at the 33rd Golden Rooster Awards, the feature spans four decades in the illustrious legacy of the team and its most famous figure, coach Lang Ping portrayed by Gong Li. Leap also co-stars Huang Bo, Wu Gang, Peng Yuchang and Bai Lang, the daughter of Lang Ping. The film notably recreates several memorable matches, including the 2016 Olympic match against Brazil with the actual players of the Chinese national team!
Leap retells stories and key moments over three generations of the Chinese women's national volleyball team and Lang Ping's long storybook career. In the 1980s, Lang Ping was a star player of the national team that won gold at the 1984 Olympics. After retiring as an athlete, she became a coach and moved overseas. In 2008, she coached the U.S. women's volleyball team to victory over the Chinese team at the Beijing Olympics. Returning to coach in China, she led the Chinese national team to gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

With glorious days from five consecutive championships in the 1980s, the Women's National Volleyball Team of China had transcended the conventional definition of sports in the hearts of Chinese people. When the Chinese team was pitted against the US team led by Lang Ping at the 2008 Beijing Volleyball Game, everyone knew that it was a match that China could not lose, and certainly could not afford to lose. Defeated, the Chinese team plunged into the deepest abyss in three decades. As Lang Ping returned to her country to coach the team, many mused aloud as to whether China's Women's National Volleyball Team would be able to retrieve lost grounds.
The film recounts the ups and downs, the sweat and sacrifice of the team over the past four decades. While the team’s persistence and teamwork became a national inspiration and collective memory in the 80s, whether the team spirit can be passed down to the new generation as China goes through rapid changes?
