YesAsia Editorial Description

YG Entertainment newcomer Lee Hi made a big splash in 2012 with her debut single reaching the top of the charts. Only 16 years old, the Survival K-Pop Star finalist has won over fans in droves with her phenomenal voice. The teen wunderkind's highly anticipated first album First Love further seals her status as K-pop's next big star. With Tablo and YG regulars like Teddy, Masta Wu, Kush and Choice37 onboard, the album features a range of jazz and R&B-style songs that highlight Lee Hi's voice, including the double title songs It's Over and Rose.

FIRST LOVE]

‘FIRST LOVE’

First Love Part. 2 – Lee Hi Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
First up is “Rose” which is the title track for the second round of promotions. It’s quite hard to categorise this song but I think it’s R&B pop. “Rose” has a lot of unconventional and unusual melodies and jazz notes, which creates a sort of melancholic feel especially in the verses and pre-chorus. The line “walk away” just gives that feeling of not caring and completely letting go of someone. The talking/mumbling part I don’t know what to make of it. I suppose it’s elaborating on the mood, but it really does nothing much and it feels detached from the rest of the song. I do really love the line “Every rose has its thorns” which potentially has quite a deep meaning behind it. Beauty and appearance could be hiding cold truth and corruption as can be seen in some celebrities, and behind a smile could be a darker intent. Basically, appearances don’t mean everything. The backing really quite suits the feel of this song. I don’t how this would be performed live, but nevertheless nice song.

Consistent feeling for mood
Hardly any auto-tune use
Subtle instrumentals that bring out vocals

Doesn’t show full vocal potential
No highlight in many songs
Makes listener fall asleep

I felt like this part of the album went for more of a lullaby feeling. I always listen to music before I sleep and I have to admit I fell asleep listening to this lol. It’s just so soothing… but that also means I didn’t actually listen to the songs and didn’t get a chance to appreciate them. Then I was woken up by “1, 2, 3, 4.” The similarity of the songs which are placed next to each other on an album means that they become unmemorable and easily forgotten which is unfortunate. There is quite a noticeable difference between the two parts of this album. I think this is a great debut album, although I think Lee Hi has potential to show more and explore more genres of music. She has a bright future ahead and she is still so young.
