Jung Hyun’s ‘V’ Repression (waffle bit)
Oh, it’s hysteria blood fever time with gothic vampirism and oddball sexual weirdness. Well, for sure Jung-hyun gets all toy dolled up for her nightmare man scare within the gothic ramparts of an Alice type rabbit hole (or a cage type marriage abode). But, hey, this is really good (in a funny creepy way) with a crazy infectious dance beat (and a bit of harpsichord) and a burlesque, semi-erotic madcap nightmare music video directed by Chan Wook Park. No doubting the sexual connotation of the ‘V’ even to the intricate symbolic bits like the crystal horse on the dresser in the MV, and concerning Jung-hyun’s sexually repressed or frustrated ‘doll’ femme can marginally relate to Lady Gaga’s succulent ‘Born This Way’ album where she's half motor bike and half woman (a metamorphism not too dissimilar to David Bowie’s Diamond Dogs album cover) of the ‘sexual ride’ freedom metaphor. Sex in ‘V’ is the key of course. But here also a distressed, repressed and blooded husband (actor Jin Gu) who entering his gothic looking home finds two dolls in a cage, one of himself and his wife both dressed in wedding attire - a symbol of their marriage day. But Jung-hyun’s doll head turns exorcist fashion, and the ‘V’ dance begins. Then a flesh Jung-hyun turns into a manic teasing dark Alice who floats in the air, lifts up her dress, ties up and clings to her frightened husband, pirouettes with other ‘vampire’ aspects of herself, in a twisted dance of mutual sexual repression and frustration.
The amazing thing about Jung-hyun is that like rock singer Alice Cooper, she’s very much different to the crazy possessed characters in her MVs, as she’s a very amiable woman. Probably a good reason Lady Gaga loves Jung-hyun so much (as well as for JHL’s arty weirdness). Here though, for me, Jung-hyun looks like something from American McGee’s Alice video games (and considering sexual metaphors and phallic symbols and this MVs weirdness, I couldn't help thinking about video game ‘Shadows of the Damned’, too, what with its psychological horror, boner gun and ‘G’ coming to mind). But sexual connotation of a woman as ‘slave machine’ or sexual repression par sae? The husband looks worried, and I’d be, too, if my ‘wife’ was floating in the air with short frilly whatists on (and lips for eyes). But is Jung-hyun’s ‘nightmare’ video dance song reflex challenging ‘sexual control’? Well, like all video art, this is surly open to many interpretations.

Jung Hyun’s ‘V’ Repression (packaging bit)
Although its possible for ‘V’ to get 1 star up to 5 (its marmite this - you’ll either love it or not), I’ve give it 5 for its MV and package presentation. The packaging is large, very large box in fact. There are two bookets, one which is a clever caricature pop up booklet of the ‘V’ stage concept (actually the central pop up may startle, embarrass or shock...but in the main surprise) and another booklet (cover showing Jung-hyun in her wedding dress and veil) that shows various photo prints of Jung-hyun from the music video, and in the inside back cover held by card tabs, are the CD and DVD. Both books are large size, too, almost the size of the packaging box. The DVD is region free and includes two versions of the MV, original and dance, which in effect is the full version with drama parts and another that’s the group stage dance edit. There’s also a ‘Making Of’ and a photo gallery. No English subtitles unfortunately to any of this.
The DVD is the main thing to have from this package with the CD a bonus (spot on to have a creative MV DVD with a physical CD release). For any wondering that this may be too sexy or offensive, it’s a yes and a no. ‘V’ is…a female phallic symbol on Stage and Show but here the ‘V’ may relate to virgins, vampires and ventriloquists (okay, maybe not the last one!) and secondly its very tame considering what you might think, tasteful (no, not in the vampire sense) and of course lightly erotic. Jun-hyun in stockings and suspenders, well I’ll leave it your own imagination. Oh, and the legs cover to the packaging has one of those slider things where when you pull the tab, the leg picture slots change from one image to another.....I wont digress about that though. Suits my daft sense of humour anyway.
If you’ve pondered over this K-pop music package, one thing for sure you don’t get many CD single release packages like this one, and this is ten fold times more a Jung-hyun presentation than previous releases. It would be great for the eccentric Kawaii fan, too! The song is also ‘one of the K-pop gang’ of electronic dance, so if you like 4 Minute, 2NE1 or Brown Eyed Girls, vampires et al...this is familiar territory. But if you can afford it buy it anyway as it will surely be a K-pop collector gem for the future (it will sell out pretty quick I’d imagine) - and you wont regret it (or should that be forget it)! I’ll certainly never forget Jung-hyun too easily after this latest manic dance tune!
