YesAsia Editorial Description

Six years in the planning, Chinese auteur Chen Kaige's period fantasy Legend of the Demon Cat is an enchanting adaptation of Yumemakura Baku's epic novel series Samon Kukai Tou no Kuni nite Oni to Utagesu about a Japanese monk's supernatural encounters in Tang Dynasty China. Sometani Shota (Parasyte) takes on the role of the enigmatic monk, while Huang Xuan (Youth) plays a poet who wants to get to the bottom of the mystery involving a cat demon that is terrorizing the capital. The film's all-star cast also includes Abe Hiroshi, Sandrine Pinna, Kitty Zhang, Qin Hao, Crystal Zhang, Zhang Luyi, Liu Haoran and Oho Ou. A spectacular feast for the eyes, Legend of the Demon Cat mesmerizes with dazzling special effects and illusions that conjure the storied splendor, romance and suspense of the Tang Dynasty.

Japanese monk Kukai (Sometani Shota) travels across the seas to Tang China's dazzling capital city of Chang'an. He is summoned to the palace to exorcise a demon that has been troubling the Emperor (Zhang Luyi), but by the time he arrives, it is already too late. In the Emperor's chamber, Kukai curiously discovers cat hair. Unsure of how to correctly document the Emperor's unusual passing, palace scribe and poet Bai Letian (Huang Xuan) teams up with Kukai to investigate various strange incidents orchestrated by a dangerous black cat demon. As Kukai and Bai run around town uncovering secrets, they gradually trace the mystery back to the tragic story of late concubine Yang Guifei (Sandrine Pinna), who is the muse of Bai's magnum opus.

Magic, mystery and romance of the Tang Dynasty
How far can movie magic get you? Quite far in the case of Chen Kaige's splendidly strange fantasy mystery Legend of the Demon Cat.

Based on a novel series by Japanese sci-fi/fantasy writer Yumemakura Baku, Legend of Demon Cat has the kind of story that one would be hard-pressed to explain out loud without sounding a bit silly. A bemused young monk (Sometani Shota) from Japan arrives in Chang'an, the capital of Tang Dynasty China, to exorcise demons for Emperor Xuanzong (Zhang Luyi), who dies mysteriously. He befriends the palace scribe, a moody poet (Huang Xuan) who swings between being super excited and dramatically devastated about his poem, and the two investigate the strange circumstances behind the Emperor's death. Namely, there's a murderous black cat on the loose. The vengeful cat demon slays, possesses and generally skulks around menacingly, while the monk and the poet run around meeting persons of interest to uncover the puzzle behind the cat's killing spree. The story winds back to the tragic life and death of the late Emperor's famously beautiful consort Yang Guifei (Sandrine Pinna). Besides a black cat up to no good, the film also spins out characters like an illusionist who conjures melons and boys who turn into cranes.

As a mystery, Legend of the Demon Cat is undeniably intriguing for its supernatural elements and reinterpretation of the history surrounding Yang Guifei's death and Bai Juyi's famous poem "Song of Everlasting Regret" about her. This curious mystery fusing history, fantasy and poetry, however, is essentially solved in the most expository of manners. Monk Kukai and poet Bai stroll briskly from place to place, and hear or read accounts that fill in the blanks of the past. And eventually the cat reveals the whole story.

While you're viewing Legend of the Demon Cat though, you're unlikely to notice how simplistic the narrative flow is because the film's dressing and details are simply so magically mystifying and visually captivating. The otherworldly awe of mind-bending illusions and the decadent splendor of the Tang Dynasty at its pinnacle are magnificently realized onscreen in majestic sets, gorgeous costumes and eye-popping special effects. The film's colorful kaleidoscope vision of the Emperor's glorious banquet for Yang Guifei alone is worth the price of admission.

To use Kukai's words, this is the romance of the Great Tang. Legend of the Demon Cat effectively overwhelms the senses with a romanticized vision of the Tang Dynasty during its golden age of art, literature and cosmopolitan culture – a spellbinding time and place for idealistic poets, tragic lovers, wise thinkers and hopeless romantics. Thanks to this stunningly beautiful and bewildering spectacle of visual effects and kooky imagery used correctly, I can finally forgive Chen Kaige for The Promise.
