The creators of A Silent Voice and Sound! Euphonium bring another gentle story of youth, loneliness, friendship and music in Liz and the Blue Bird. Directed by Yamada Naoko, the animated film follows high school seniors Mizore and Nozomi, who have been best friends since middle school. Shy Mizore plays the oboe and relies greatly on her more outgoing friend who plays the flute. As the end of their school days draws near, Mizore feels increasingly anxious and depressed about their inevitable separation. Meanwhile, the girls are also preparing for the national school band competition for which they are playing a piece based on Liz and the Blue Bird, a fairy tale about a lonely girl who has to let go of her only friend.

アム 北宇治高校吹奏楽部、波乱の第二楽章』がアニメーション映画化。制作は、映画『聲の形』で第40回日本アカデミー賞優秀アニメーション賞、東京アニメアワードフェスティバル2017アニメオブザイヤー作品賞劇場映画部門グランプリなどを受賞した京都アニメーション。そして、監督・山田尚子、脚本・吉田玲子、キャラクターデザイン・西屋太志、音楽・牛尾憲輔ら、映画『聲の形』のメインスタッフが集結。 ――あの子は青い鳥。広い空を自由に飛びまわることがあの子にとっての幸せ。だけど、私はひとり置いていかれるのが怖くて、あの子を鳥籠に閉じ込め、何も気づいていないふりをした。北宇治高等学校吹奏楽部でオーボエを担当する鎧塚みぞれと、フルートを担当する傘木希美。高校三年生、二人の最後のコンクール。その自由曲に選ばれた「リズと青い鳥」にはオーボエとフルートが掛け合うソロがあった。「なんだかこの曲、わたしたちみたい」屈託もなくそう言ってソロを嬉しそうに吹く希美と、希美と過ごす日々に幸せを感じつつも終わりが近づくことを恐れるみぞれ。「親友」のはずの二人。しかし、オーボエとフルートのソロは上手くかみ合わず、距離を感じさせるものだった。
