168 = Pathway to prosperity ... and laughs
Pretty Tiffany (Vivian Hsu) is the perfect loving wife to her husband Kwok Fu (Wang Xue Bing). One day her perfect life is disrupted when the mysterious Fok (He Jiong) bursts into Tiffany's home claiming to have kidnapped Kwok Fu. He threatens to kill Kwok Fu unless Tiffany agrees to Fok's strange request: She must pose as his wife for the next week. To save her beloved hubby, Tiffany can only agree to this mad scheme. Yet Tiffany soon begins concocting schemes of her own, as she seeks to figure out just whom this Fok character is, where he is keeping Kwok Fu, and how she can manage to free her husband.
Director Jeff Lau's "Lock Me Up, Tie Him Down" (a.k.a. Perfect Fake Wife 168) proves to be a cleverly plotted and slickly executed dark comedy, in which we find mystery wrapped within mystery and the outcome arrives as an ingenious (and unexpectedly warmhearted) surprise. As usual, Lau brings great energy -- and a colorfully comic-bookish look -- to his comedy.
The cast is superb. Vivian Hsu looks ravishingly lovely and performs with a conviction I'd never previously seen from her. He Jiong is no mere stock villain; he lends his character a real depth. Film veterans Frankie Chan and Kara Hui are wildly funny in cameo appearances as Tiffany's parents and Harriet Yeung shines as Tiffany's nosy, snarky neighbor.
Strangely, for a film directed by someone of Jeff Lau's stature, it seems that "Lock Me Up, Tie Him Down" was released without much acclaim and quickly disappeared from theatres. This truly is a shame. Audiences should not miss this hugely entertaining little comic gem.
