YesAsia Editorial Description

Six teens head to a remote island for a long weekend of fun and partying. But they've chosen the wrong time and place. The deserted island was traditionally used as the site of sacrificial rituals for the Devouring Ghost Festival. On the night of Friday September 13, the angry spirits rise again – and they're out for blood. SARS Wars director Taweewat Wantha delivers blood and gore aplenty in the teen horror slasher Long Weekend (a.k.a. Thongsuk 13). Sticking to the trusty formula of simple story and outrageous scares, the film is filled with grudge-filled ghosts, gruesome deaths and spine-chilling, eye-popping visuals. The film's young cast is led by singer Namcha Cheranut Yusanonda and actor Chinawut Indracusin, as the eponymous creepy teen Thongsuk.

Product Information

On a long weekend during school break, a group of friends set off for a weekend getaway. What seems like a pleasant vacation turns horribly wrong on the second night. It’s Friday the 13th , known as the of the devouring ghosts, a ritual practiced by the villagers nearby. That night, the bullies play a big prank on Thongsook by locking him up in a cabinet in a shrine at the edge of the island, where the ritual usually takes place. But when they open the cabinet again, Thongsook is not in there instead, they’ve unlocked a whole collection of fearsome spirits that begin to prey on the visitors one by one…

A very dark and thunderous Lost Weekend Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Original title ‘Thongsook13’ relates to the male protagonist Thongsook (Chinawut Indracusin) who is plagued by demonic spirits but protected by a sacred amulet he wears around his neck. If ever the amulet is removed, the demons wreak havoc with Thongsook’s odd but affable character. The movie begins as such with Thongsook as a child in a school hospital who reveals to curious girl Nam his ability to see ghosts. But on letting Nam do so Thongsook has to remove his amulet and allow himself to get possessed for Nam to view a freaky terrifying demon ghost. After having this terrifying ghost revelation and Thongsook back to normal, the story moves forward in time to the protagonist’s teen student years and where adult Nam (Natpassara Adulyamethasiri) and her student friends decide to go on an adventurous thrill seeking break to a remote island where they stay at a tree shrouded house for party frolics. The three lads and three girls get to the desolate island by a boatman, who warns the teens about the island’s curse that once on Friday 13th a devouring ghost blood sacrifice ritual went terribly wrong and many at the ritual died from the wrath of angry ghosts. Leaving the boatman to return the following day the gang make their way to the big house. Thongsook and Nam grew close since childhood, but Nam’s friends leave Thongsook out of their party due to his oddball ways of seeing ghosts and telling them he can transport himself through portals, until Thongsook appears out of a cupboard in Nam’s room. As one lad fancies Nam, two of her male friends play a prank on Thongsook by taking him to the dreaded animal sacrifice temple, locking him up inside the ritual chamber and breaking away Thongsook’s amulet protection. This evokes the island’s angry mist spirits who possess Thongsook and then besiege by madness and terror the minds of the other teens. And Friday 13th a day hence, the descent of a demon.

‘Long Weekend’ is like Silent Hill 2’s James Sunderland dropping down into his dark ‘hole’ with a tense claustrophobic dark ‘nowhere’ place of Grave Encounters. A quite unnerving Thai teen horror theatre that is unrelenting when the otherworld poltergeist nightmare gets underway. It’s amusing amusing, too, with a likeable cast of three males and three girls. Ghostly digital FXs are darkly effective with bent back Exorcist possessions and violent smoke shifting ghosts. If looking for a reasonably good scary encounter ‘Lost Weekend’ is worth a try.
