YesAsia Editorial Description
The unprecedented commercial and critical success of To Be Number One (1991) started the wave of biopics of famous outlaws that swept Hong Kong Cinema in the 1990s. The hit film's creators (writer-producers Johnny Mak and Stephen Siu, director Poon Man Kit) and star (Ray Lui) reunited two years later for an even bigger biopic project, a two-part saga based on the life of legendary Shanghai crime lord Du Yuesheng. Also returning were the key supporting actors including Kent Cheng, Elvis Tsui, and Cecilia Yip, and the cast was further reinforced with popular actors Ken Tong, Michael Miu, Carina Lau, and Siqin Gaowa.
The film garnered nominations at the Hong Kong Film Awards (for Best Screenplay) and Golden Horse Awards (for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design). Set in the first half of the 20th century, the story details how Lu Yuesheng (Ray Lui) rises to power in the underworld of Shanghai. He begins as a small-time crook, making huge profits out of opium trade, and eventually becomes the godfather ruling the notorious Green Gang, so powerful that even the big shots in the highest political office have to seek his alliance.

Interesting biopic
Interesting biopic
"Lord of East China Sea" tells of the rise of uneducated streetside fruit vendor Lu Yun San (Ray Lui) to the heights of power in Republic era Shanghai. Yun San is known for standing up for his friends and for his love of gambling. These traits cost him his money and cost him his future with his great love, Donna (Cecilia Yip). However, coming to the defense of his neighbors makes him Mr. Big in his community. This prominence, coupled with his willingness to take risks, cause the French Concession's powerful and corrupt chief police inspector Huang (Kent Cheng) to embrace Yun San as his right-hand man. Yun San uses this position to protect leftists in his neighborhood, While he seeks only to stick up for the regular folks with which he grew up, his choice later places him in a great dilemma.
Chief Inspector Huang hates that the opium trade operates outside of his control. He tasks Yun San with intercepting a big opium shipment being delivered by colorful General Yuan (Elvis Tsui). Yun San seizes the opportunity to forge a troika amongst Huang, Yuan, and himself in which they jointly control the drug trade to their mutual enrichment. Their prominence ineluctably draws them into the growing conflict between the Communists and the Kuomintang, a conflict which will create strains within the troika and turn the powerful trio into pawns in a bigger struggle. "Lord of East China Sea" richly deserved the Golden Horse Awards it received for production design and costuming. As lensed by cinematographer Horace Wong, the film, on a relatively small budget, succeeds in giving an authentic look and feel to its scenes of early 20th century Shanghai. It is impossible for me to discern whether the movie deserved its Hong Kong Film Award for best screenplay; the English subtitles on this Joy Sales DVD are greatly flawed. Ray Lui's performance underlines Yun San's illiteracy by having him appear perplexed by the sweeping political forces that control his fate, perhaps an unusual acting choice for such a powerful character. His rapid rise in Shanghai's treacherous social system seems due more to his ability to mediate confrontations than any forcefulness on his part. The film doesn't dwell on the moral implications of Yun San's actions; he rightly or wrongly is depicted as a mostly noble character in an ignoble environment. Overlong and overloaded, "Lord of East China Sea" still is worth a look. |
