YesAsia Editorial Description

Janice Vidal steps into new musical territory in her comeback album Love and Other Things, which marks her first release under Warner Music. Rather than sticking to her well-liked pop ballad style, the songstress explores the sounds of R&B, soft rock, neo soul and jazz through eight love songs, including the chart-toppers "Butterfly," "Enemy" and "Frames."

The metamorphosis of Janice Vidal
During her ten years under Leon Lai's label A Music, Janice Vidal released a number of hit ballads that brought her various music awards. However, her repetitive pop ballad style has deterred her from achieving greater success. After joining Warner Music, the singer restarts her career with a series of surprising songs that vary considerably in style. Expanding her music map, Janice rediscovers herself in the album Love and Other Stories.

Janice expresses her determination to make a change in her first comeback single "Butterfly" (Track 5), a compelling mix of soft rock and R&B. By asking "Who are you?" in an uncanny violin-driven opening, the singer reveals her confusion about herself, her past and the future. The attractive guitar melody and strong drumbeats in the middle eight push the song to an emotional climax. Her despair can be discerned in the agonizing lyrics. Janice's reluctance to stick to the same style is depicted as the long-time makeup being put on her face. Comparing herself to a butterfly after metamorphosis, the singer asks for support so she can spread her wings and go wherever she wants.

The "romance trilogy" is composed of "Wounded" (Track 3), "Enemy" (Track 1) and "Frames" (Track 6). Janice provides a convincing psychological portrait of a heartbroken woman who becomes disdainful of her cheating lover and eventually finds hope again. To express the hysterical sorrow of the protagonist, a typical Cantopop style is adopted in the melancholic piano-accompanied "Wounded." The cool R&B style of "Enemy" impeccably conveys the glacial disdain for an unfaithful boyfriend. Rather than exasperation, Janice exudes calm confidence through her firm vocals. The hopeful "Frames" creates a peaceful space away from the agony of breakup with its soothing neo soul sound. Through the jazzy healing trip, the protagonist rediscovers the feeling of love.

Contrasting with her previous romance-driven releases, Love and Other Things is a thematically rich album that features not just love stories but also Janice's private feelings and attitudes towards life. Marking a new start of the singer's music journey, this album explores her undiscovered potential and the unlimited possibilities of Cantopop music.
