Directed by Chen Chun Liang, the 1979 Taiwan classic Love in Chilly Spring starred songstress Fong Fei Fei in her first leading film role Co-starring Liang Hsiu Shen and Liu Shang Chien, the tragic romantic melodrama is set in Taiwan during the Japaneses colonial period.

Xiu Lan (Fong Fei Fei) comes from a well-off family that manages a forestry area, but she falls in love with servant's son Chang Rong (Liang Hsiu Shen). However, Japanese major Yokoyama (Liu Shang Chien), who forcibly takes over forest management, also falls in love at first sight with Xiu Lan. When Yokoyama learns that Xiu Lan already has someone else in her heart, he uses his power to send Chang Rong away to the frontline.

　　本片可說是一部披著抗日電影外衣的文藝愛情電影，故事發生在二次大戰末期宜蘭太平山上的林場，林場主人的女兒林秀蘭（鳳飛飛飾）愛上了佣人的兒子徐長榮（梁修身飾）。而來到林場視查的橫山少佐（劉少謙飾）對美麗的秀蘭也一見鍾情，便在強收林家的林場之餘強迫林父將秀蘭許配給他，林父面對脅迫毫不退縮，於是便促成秀蘭與長榮的姻緣。沒想到橫山少佐用職務之便橫刀奪愛，將長榮發配南洋擔任軍伕；但此舉沒有讓少佐得到秀蘭的人，更得不到她的心。求愛心切的橫山在河畔強行向秀蘭示愛不成，反遭聽到呼救聲趕來的啞巴打死，而搭救的啞巴也在打鬥中被少佐開槍射殺，死在秀蘭懷中。 當戰爭終於結束，在南洋身受重傷的長榮撐著垂死的身軀回到台灣，只為了履行諾言和秀蘭完婚，但傷重的他在婚禮前夜卻不治身亡，心碎的秀蘭在父親支持下仍以冥婚的方式和長榮完婚，電影便在哀戚的婚禮結尾畫下句點。
