Among the countless survival shows in Korea over the past few years, JTBC's Super Band was certainly not the most internationally popular audition program, but it's been unexpectedly well-received among viewers. It has brought more recognition to bands like Hoppípolla, Purple Rain and LUCY and musicians like zai.ro and Woo Sung. I recently came across the show's first runner-up LUCY, and their new album Snooze is beyond my expectation.
LUCY's second single album Snooze features a rearranged version of the same-titled song, which was one of their semi-final singles on Super Band. Co-produced by the members, "Snooze" (Track 1) is written for adults who aren't ready for society yet: "But you don't have to be an adult. We are gold and feel this freedom. When you thought you could do everything, we were golden feel our childhood." The sounds of violin add a refreshing layer to the song that makes the whole composition more unique. Compared to their semi-final song, this version is performed in a lower pitch that sounds more laid-back and comfortable. "Snooze" is complicated in a way that is not overly flashy. Bassist Won Sang again works as the main producer of side track Farther and Farther (Track 2), while guitarist Sang Yeop and violinist Ye Chan take part in the lyrics and composition respectively. Farther and Farther is a rather dreamy and emotional track about memories gradually fading away as time goes by. Snooze is such a pleasing listen, especially with its meaningful lyrics that suit the band's young vibe. I truly wish that LUCY will become more successful and recognized for their great work and talent! |
